185th New York Volunteer Infantry
The 185th New York Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 185th New York Infantry was organized August 26, 1864 at Syracuse, New York and mustered on September 19, 1864, for one-year service under the command of Colonel Edwin S. Jenney. The regiment was attached to 1st Brigade, 1st Division, V Corps, Army of the Potomac, to May 1865. The 185th New York Infantry mustered out of service May 30, 1865 in Washington, D.C. Adelbert Everson
Adelbert N. Everson (April 12, 1841 – July 23, 1913) was an American soldier who fought in the American Civil War. Everson received the country's highest award for bravery during combat, the Medal of Honor, for his action during the Battle of Five Forks in Virginia on 1 April 1865. He was honored with the award on 10 May 1865. Biography Everson was born in Cicero, New York, on 12 April 1841. He enlisted in the 185th New York Volunteer Infantry, 185th New York Infantry. He died on 23 July 1913 and his remains are interred at the Riverside Cemetery in Brewerton, New York. Gustavus Sniper
Gustavus Sniper (June 11, 1836 – March 29, 1894) was a Grand Duchy of Baden-born Union brevet brigadier general during the period of the American Civil War. He received his appointment as brevet brigadier general dated to March 13, 1865. Biography Sniper was born in Freiburg im Breisgau, Grand Duchy of Baden. He emigrated with his family to Syracuse, New York in 1842, where he was educated in Syracuse public schools, and supplemented his education by attending night school. As an adult he worked in a cigar-making business. Sniper was a member of the Republican Party and opposed slavery. In 1854, he joined the Syracuse Light Guards and also held offices with the Syracuse Grays and the Davis Light Guards. When the Civil War broke out, he organized a company of Onondaga County men for the 12th New York Volunteer Infantry. The 5th New York Veteran Infantry Regiment was an Infantry Regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment was known as ''"Duryée‘s Zouaves."'' The regiment had two uniforms during its time.
