''The Irish Times'' is an Irish daily broadsheet newspaper and online digital publication. It launched on 29 March 1859. The editor is Ruadhán Mac Cormaic. It is published every day except Sundays. ''The Irish Times'' is considered a newspaper of record for Ireland. Though formed as a Protestant nationalist paper, within two decades and under new owners it had become the voice of British unionism in Ireland. It is no longer a pro unionist paper; it presents itself politically as "liberal and progressive", as well as being centre-right on economic issues. The editorship of the newspaper from 1859 until 1986 was controlled by the Anglo-Irish Protestant minority, only gaining its first nominal Irish Catholic editor 127 years into its existence. Barry Yelverton, 5th Viscount Avonmore
Captain Barry Nugent Yelverton, 5th Viscount Avonmore (11 February 1859 – 13 February 1885), was an Anglo-Irish peerage of Ireland, peer and an officer in the 37th Foot, which was renamed as the Hampshire Regiment in 1881. Life Avonmore was born at Edinburgh, the son of William Charles Yelverton, 4th Viscount Avonmore, William Yelverton (later Lord Avonmore) by his marriage to Emily Marianne Ashworth, the daughter of Charles Ashworth, Major-General Sir Charles Ashworth, who had previously been married to Edward Forbes, a botanist, by whom she had several children. Daisy Bates (Australia)
Daisy May Bates, CBE (born Margaret Dwyer; 16 October 1859 – 18 April 1951) was an Irish-Australian journalist, welfare worker and self-taught anthropologist who conducted fieldwork amongst several Indigenous nations in western and southern Australia. Bates was a lifelong student of Australian Aboriginal culture and society and was the first anthropologist to carry out a detailed study of Australian Aboriginal culture. William Hamilton (cricketer)
William Drummond Hamilton (4 May 1859 in County Louth, Ireland – 4 March 1914 in Oxford, England) was an Irish cricketer. A left-handed batsman and wicket-keeper, he played fourteen times for the Ireland cricket team between 1883 and 1896, and also played first-class cricket for Oxford University and the MCC. Cricketing career First-class career Hamilton was educated at Haileybury and The Queen's College, Oxford. He played cricket for Haileybury in 1876 and 1877, and made his first-class debut for Oxford University against Australia in May 1882. He played five further matches for the University side that year against the MCC (twice), the Gentlemen of England and Surrey, before gaining his blue in June against Cambridge. He was so nervous in the match that at one point he started to run the wrong way when called for a run. Ada Rehan
Ada Rehan (born Bidelia Crehan; June 12, 1857 – January 8, 1916) was an American actress and comedian who typified the "personality" style of acting in the nineteenth century. Early life and career She was born Bidelia Crehan in Limerick city, Ireland, one of five siblings born to Thomas Crehan (died 1890) and Harriet (or Harriett) Ryan Crehan (died 1901). She was baptised in St Michael's Roman Catholic Church on 12 June 1857. Although by the time she applied for a U.S. passport, she had shaved a few years off and gave 1860 as her year of birth. The family surname was apparently changed to Rehan later. When she was a small child, her family emigrated to the United States and settled in Brooklyn, New York. Daniel Gallery
Daniel Gallery (April 13, 1859 – November 9, 1920) was a Canadian politician. Born near Labasheeda, in Slievedooley, County Clare, Ireland, the son of Thomas Gallery and Mary O'Neill. Daniel Gallery moved with his fathers and brothers to Montreal Quebec in the early 1860s, after his father Thomas was evicted from his farms at Slievedooley. Daniel's brother John set up a successful large bakery in Montreal Gallery Brothers. Daniel Gallery was educated at the Christian Brothers' School. A merchant, he was an Alderman from 1898 to 1903 and acting mayor. For four years Daniel was School Commissioner of the Catholic Schools Board in Montreal. He visited Ireland in 1907 as part of a delegation from the Montreal Educational Commission, visited the Presentation brothers in Cork and was instrumental in bringing the Brothers to Canada in 1910 to improve education for English speaking Catholics.
