Governors Of The Australian States
The governors of the Australian states are the representatives of Australia's monarch in each of Australia's six states. The governors are the nominal chief executives of the states, performing the same constitutional and ceremonial functions at the state level as does the Governor-General of Australia at the national or federal level. The state governors are not subject to the constitutional authority of the governor-general, but are directly responsible to the monarch. In practice, with notable exceptions the governors are generally required by convention to act on the advice of the state premiers or the other members of a state's cabinet. Origins The office of governor ("governor in chief" was an early title) is the oldest constitutional office in Australia. George Lewis Becke
George Lewis Becke (or Louis Becke; 18 June 1855 – 18 February 1913) was an Australian Pacific trader, short story writer and novelist. Early life Becke was born at Port Macquarie, New South Wales, son of Frederick Becke, Clerk of Petty Sessions and his wife Caroline Matilda, née Beilby. Both parents were born in England. Becke was the ninth of twelve children and had a tendency to wander; he has stated that before he was 10 he had twice run away from home. The family moved to Hunters Hill, Sydney in 1867 and Becke was educated at Fort Street High School. In 1869, Becke travelled to San Francisco with his brother William Vernon and was away for nineteen months. At 16 years of age, Becke was a stowaway on a ship bound for Samoa. The Chief Justice of New South Wales is the senior judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales and the highest-ranking judicial officer in the Australian state of New South Wales. William Portus Cullen
Sir William Portus Cullen (28 May 1855 – 6 April 1935) was an Australian barrister, the 7th Chief Justice of New South Wales, Lieutenant-Governor of New South Wales, and Chancellor of the University of Sydney. Early life and education Cullen was born at Mount Johnston, near Jamberoo, New South Wales, the seventh son of John and Rebecca (née Clinton) Cullen. A brother, Joseph Cullen, was a Member of Parliament for both New South Wales and Western Australia. William was educated at country state schools, including Kiama, and the University of Sydney, where he won a scholarship. William Cullen graduated B.A. with first class honours in classics in 1880, M.A. in 1882, LL.B. in 1885 and LL.D. in 1887. During his university career he won the University, Lithgow, Barker, and Renwick scholarships, and the John Smith prize. Henry Saunders (politician)
Henry John Saunders (16 February 1855 – 13 October 1919) was an Australian engineer, businessman and politician. He was a prominent mining entrepreneur during the Western Australian gold rush and served on the Western Australian Legislative Council (1894–1902), as mayor of Perth (1895–1898), and briefly as a Senator for Western Australia (1903). Early life Saunders was born on 16 February 1855 in London, England, the son of Maria Albers (née Pedder) and Thomas Bush Saunders. His father was a barrister. He attended Clifton College in Bristol, then trained as a civil engineer. He immigrated to Western Australia in 1884 and settled in Perth. He became the chief engineer of the Midland Railway Company and established the firm of Saunders and Barrett. During the Western Australian gold rush, Saunders made a fortune as a mining entrepreneur.
