Peter Schousboe
Peter Schousboe (1766–1832) was a Danish botanist. Biography Peder Kofod Anker Schousboe was born in Rønne, Denmark and died in Tangier, Morocco, having served as Danish consul general in Tangier from 1800 onwards. He conducted a botanical expedition in Spain and Morocco during the years 1791-93. In 1800, he published his major work ''Om Væxtriget i Marokko''. Among the plants that he was the first to describe was the popular garden flower ''Salvia interrupta''; the bushwillow genus ''Schousboea'' (now considered a synonym of ''Combretum'') was named in his honour. Rasmus Christian Rask
Rasmus Kristian Rask (; born Rasmus Christian Nielsen Rasch; 22 November 1787 – 14 November 1832) was a Danish linguist and philologist. He wrote several grammars and worked on comparative phonology and morphology. Rask traveled extensively to study languages, first to Iceland, where he wrote the first grammar of Icelandic, and later to Russia, Persia, India, and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). Shortly before his death, he was hired as professor of Eastern languages at the University of Copenhagen. Rask is especially known for his contributions to comparative linguistics, including an early formulation of what would later be known as Grimm's Law. He was elected as a member to the American Philosophical Society in 1829. Wilhelm Bendz
Wilhelm Ferdinand Bendz (20 March 1804 – 14 November 1832) was a Danish painter mainly known for genre works and portraits which often portray his artist colleagues and their daily lives. He was one of the most talented artists in the successful generation of painters who studied under Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg but died early and has therefore left a relatively small oeuvre. Biography Early life and education Wilhelm Bendz was born on 20 March 1804 in Odense on the island of Funen. He was sent to Copenhagen where he attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1820 to 1825, where he studied under Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg. In 1825 he made an unsuccessful attempt to win the gold medal, only given to history paintings, the most prestigious genre at that time, and after that decided to specialize in portraits and genre works. Juliane Marie Jessen
Juliane Marie Jessen (11 February 1760 – 6 October 1832) was an early Danish female author and translator who became known in 1819 by winning first prize for the words she wrote for a national anthem for Denmark, with her ''Dannemark! Dannemark! – hellige Lyd!'' (Denmark, Denmark - holy sound), although it was never officially adopted. She also published other works including poetry and, in 1815, the play ''Ei blot til Lyst''. Jessen learned poetry from her uncle, Christian Frederik Jacobi. Beginning in 1787, she spent three years as a reader for Juliana Maria of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Queen Juliana Maria until ill health intervened. Thereafter she educated young girls. Her most notable literary works are the play ''Ei blot til Lyst'' (1815) and the anthology ''Smaae Mark-Violer plantede i Danmarks Digterhauge'' (1819). Friedrich Kuhlau
Friedrich Daniel Rudolf Kuhlau (German; Danish sometimes ''Frederick Kulav'') (11 September 1786 – 12 March 1832) was a Danish pianist and composer during the late Classical and early Romantic periods. He was a central figure of the Danish Golden Age and is immortalized in Danish cultural history through his music for ''Elves' Hill'', the first true work of Danish National Romanticism and a concealed tribute to the absolute monarchy. To this day it is his version of this melody which is the definitive arrangement. During his lifetime, Kuhlau was known primarily as a concert pianist and composer of Danish opera, but was responsible for introducing many of Beethoven's works, which he greatly admired, to Copenhagen audiences. Kuhlau was a prolific composer, as evidenced by the fact that although his house burned down, destroying all of his unpublished manuscripts, he still left a legacy of more than 200 published works in most genres.
