John Brown (1723–1808)
John Brown (3 March 1723 - 16 January 1808) was a Scottish-Danish merchant and ship-owner. He was a joint founder of John & David Brown in 1759. The company owned 17 ships in 1787 but was liquidated the following year. He was also active in the Danish Asiatic Company where he was a member of the board of directors from 1770–75 and from 1779–85. He was appointed as General War Commissioner in 1776. He was the second-largest landowner in Gentofte and owned Benzonseje (now Risbyholm) from 1784 to 1788. Early life Brown was born on 3 March 1723 in Dalkeith, Scotland, the son of William Brown and Margeret Brown. He came to Denmark a few months after his father had been killed in the Battle of Culloden. Career Brown was initially employed in Nicolai Fenwich's trading house in Helsingør. He moved to Copenhagen in 1750 to work as a general trader. In 1755, he was granted citizenship as a merchant. Medalist
A medalist (or medallist) is an artist who designs medals, plaquettes, badges, metal medallions, coins and similar small works in relief in metal. Historically, medalists were typically also involved in producing their designs, and were usually either sculptors or goldsmiths by background. In modern times, medalists are mostly primarily sculptors of larger works, but in the past the number of medals and coins produced were sufficient to support specialists who spent most of their career producing them. From the 19th century, the education of a medalist often began with time as an engraver, or a formal education in an academy, particularly modeling and portraiture. On coins, a mark or symbol signifying the medalist as the original designer was often included in a hidden location and is not to be mistaken for the symbol of the mint master. Daniel Adzer
Daniel Jensen Adzer (17 January 1732 3 April 1808) was a Danish medallist (i.e., medal maker). He was appointed as royal medallist in 1766. Early life and education Adzer was born on 17 January 1732 in Copenhagen, the son of master (i.e., a metal worker specialising in small articles) Jens Jensen Adzer and Maria Cathrine Jürgensen (c. 1696–1779). He initially apprenticed as a goldsmith in Copenhagen. In 1754, he traveled to Paris, where he met another young goldsmith from Copenhagen, J. H. Wolff, who inspired him to pursue a career as a medallist. He was subsequently articled to the medallist Jean Duvivier. Career In 1757, Adzer returned to Copenhagen. His first work as a medallist was the reverse side of Magnus Gustav Arbien's medal to the Art Academy's patron, A. G. Moltke. After Arbien's death in 1760, he and Wolff were charged with the execution of a number of medals in conjunction with ''suverænitetsfesten''. Johan Christian Fabricius
Johan Christian Fabricius (7 January 1745 – 3 March 1808) was a Danish zoologist, specialising in "Insecta", which at that time included all arthropods: insects, arachnids, crustaceans and others. He was a student of Carl Linnaeus, and is considered one of the most important entomologists of the 18th century, having named nearly 10,000 species of animals, and established the basis for the modern insect classification. Biography Johan Christian Fabricius was born on 7 January 1745 at Tønder in the Duchy of Schleswig, where his father was a doctor. He studied at the gymnasium at Altona and entered the University of Copenhagen in 1762. Later the same year he travelled together with his friend and relative Johan Zoëga to Uppsala, where he studied under Carl Linnaeus for two years.
