Niue Assembly
The Niue Assembly ( niu, Niue Fono Ekepule) is the legislature of Niue. It consists of 20 members; 14 representatives of the villages and 6 elected on a common roll. Members are directly elected by universal suffrage, and serve a three-year term. Niue follows the Westminster system of government, with the Premier elected by the Assembly and the Cabinet drawn from it. History The Assembly is descended from the Island Council established under the Cook Islands Act 1915. This was disbanded in 1959 and reconstituted as the Assembly, which was successively granted greater control. The Assembly assumed full law-making power within the constitution upon self-government in 1974. The Assembly is physically located in Alofi. John Operator Tiakia
John Operator Tiakia is a Niuean politician and former member of the Niue Assembly. He is the father of MP Rhonda Tiakia Tomailuga. Tiakia worked as a civil servant for the Department of Public Works. He was elected to the Niue Assembly at the 1996 Niuean general election, and served as MP for Lakepa until 2005. After leaving parliament he was appointed Public Service Commissioner. Following the 2011 election he was unsuccessfully nominated by opposition MP Terry Coe for the position of Speaker. The politics of Niue take place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic dependency, whereby the Chief Minister is the head of government, and of a non-partisan system. Dion Paki Taufitu is a Niuean politician and Cabinet Minister. Taufitu formerly served as clerk of the Niue Assembly. He was first elected to the Assembly at the 1990 Niuean general election. He was re-elected at the 1996 election. He was re-elected at the 1999 election and appointed Minister of Administrative Services, Public Works, Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry, Employment, and Broadcasting in the government of Sani Lakatani. Jack Lipitoa
Jack Willie Lipitoa (born ) is a Niuean politician and former Member of the Niue Assembly. He is the older brother of former Cabinet Minister Enetama Lipitoa. Lipitoa worked as a teacher, first at Matalave and then at Niue High School. He was first elected to the Niuean Assembly at the 1987 Niuean general election, replacing his brother who had moved to a seat on the common roll. He has been re-elected at every election since.
