The ''Great Norwegian Encyclopedia'' ( no, Store Norske Leksikon, abbreviated ''SNL''), is a Norwegian-language online encyclopedia. The online encyclopedia is among the most-read Norwegian published sites, with more than two million unique visitors per month. Paper editions 1978–2007 The ''SNL'' was created in 1978, when the two publishing houses Aschehoug and Gyldendal merged their encyclopedias and created the company Kunnskapsforlaget. Up until 1978 the two publishing houses of Aschehoug and Gyldendal, Norway's two largest, had published ' and ', respectively. The respective first editions were published in 1907–1913 (Aschehoug) and 1933–1934 (Gyldendal). The slump in sales for paper-based encyclopedias around the turn of the 21st century hit Kunnskapsforlaget hard, but a fourth edition of the paper encyclopedia was secured by a grant of ten million Norwegian kroner from the foundation Fritt Ord in 2003. Ole Nilsen Weierholt
Ole Nilsen Weierholt (December 29, 1718 – December 14, 1792) was a Wood carving, wood carver, primarily known as a pattern maker for ironworks in Aust-Agder, Nedenes Counties of Norway, county, Norway, especially for the Næs Ironworks. He created wooden patterns in the Rococo style for cast-iron stoves, and has been referred to as the "Rococo Master of Southern Norway" ( no, Sørlandets rokokkomester). Weierholt was born in Sagene in Austre Moland, today part of the municipality of Arendal. He worked as a carpenter and wood carver, and he was involved in a large number of construction jobs for the district's churches in the mid-1700s, including Austre Moland Church and Tromøy Church. Weierholt created many casting patterns for the Næs Ironworks; he is especially known for the pattern "the chamberlain from Ethiopia" (''Kammersvenden av Morland''), which he copied from an older model. Erike Kirstine Kolstad
Erike (or Ericha) Kirstine Kolstad (1792–14 April 1830), was a Norwegian stage actress. She belonged to the pioneer generation of the first public theatre in Norway, the theatre of Christiania Offentlige Theater in Oslo in 1827. She is the first Norwegian actress known by name of this theatre, the first in Norway and thereby also the first professional native actress of her country. Life Erike Kirstine Kolstad was the daughter of the procurator Erich Kolstad and Birgitha Maria Walseth. She married the actor Poul Jensen Boiflin (1797-1841) in 1829. Kolstad reportedly made her debut at the stage of the carpenters guild in Trondheim. Christian VII
Christian VII (29 January 1749 – 13 March 1808) was a monarch of the House of Oldenburg who was King of Denmark–Norway and Duke of Schleswig and Holstein from 1766 until his death in 1808. For his motto he chose: "''Gloria ex amore patriae''" ("Glory through love of the fatherland"). Christian VII's reign was marked by mental illness and for most of his reign, Christian was only nominally king. His royal advisers changed depending on who won power struggles around the throne. From 1770 to 1772, his court physician Johann Friedrich Struensee was the ''de facto'' ruler of the country and introduced progressive reforms signed into law by Christian VII. Struensee was deposed by a coup in 1772, after which the country was ruled by Christian's stepmother, Juliane Marie of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, his half-brother Frederick, and the Danish politician Ove Høegh-Guldberg. Christian Schou
Christian Schou (13 December 1792 – 15 September 1874) was a Norwegian merchant, brewer and politician. Biography He was born in Christiania (now Oslo), Norway. He was the son of Didrik Hansen Schou (1744–1795) and Anna Ludovica Wittrog. His father died when he was quite young and he was raised by a relative. Schou established trading license at Christiania in 1822 and ran a farmer's shop at Grønland. He also operated a vinegar distillery and liquor store. In 1834, he acquired the Vestre Sinsen farm and ran a dairy. In 1837 he bought Jørgen Young's brewery in Fjerdingen, which he converted to Schou Brewery. Schou owned property along the Akerselva and utilized areas closest to the river for expansion of the brewery. Schou became a member of the first presidency of Christiania in 1837. Even Hammer Holmboe (18 November 1792 – 23 December 1859) was a Norwegian politician. Personal life He was born in Trondenes as the son of bailiff Jens Holmboe (bailiff), Jens Holmboe (1752–1804) and his wife Anna Margrethe Irgens (1766–1851).
