William Mitchell (Scottish Entrepreneur)
William Mitchell (16 March 1781 – 17 February 1854) was a Scottish entrepreneur. He was born in Alloa, Clackmannanshire, the second son of Alexander Mitchell and Janet Barrowman. He was a co-founder of the Alloa Coal Company later run by his sons Andrew and Alexander. He was an important investor (along with other members of his family) in the Leith shipping line William Thomson and Co.; better known as the Ben Line. In the 1840s, the Ben Line was in the North Atlantic trade, taking Alloa coal to Canada and returning with timber. Mitchell's more famous grandsons include the British civil servant in India John Ontario Miller (1857–1843), the founder of the Luscar Coal Company Colonel Alexander Mitchell (1871–1934), Sir Mitchell Mitchell-Thomson (1846–1918) a Lord Provost of Edinburgh, the Auditor-General of Tasmania Duncan Charles Mitchell (1859–1925) and the noted Scottish Humanities scholar William Mitchell Ramsay (1851–1939). Alexander Berry
Alexander Berry (30 November 1781 – 17 September 1873) was a Scottish-born surgeon, merchant and List of explorers, explorer who was given in 1822 a land grant of 10,000 acres (40 km2) and 100 convicts to establish the first European settlement on the south coast of New South Wales, Australia. This settlement became known as the Coolangatta Estate and developed into what is now the town of Berry, New South Wales, Berry, named in honour of Alexander and his brother David Berry (landowner), David. Early life Berry was born to parents James Berry and Isabel Tod at Hill of Tarvit, Hilltarvit Mains farmhouse, near Cupar in Fife, Scotland where his father was a tenant, during a blinding snowstorm on the evening of 30 November 1781 (Saint Andrew's Day, St Andrew's Day, the national day of Scotland). Allan Burns (surgeon)
Allan Burns (18 September 1781 – 22 June 1813) was a Scottish surgeon and physician. A lecturer on surgery and anatomy at Glasgow, he studied medicine in Glasgow. He visited Russia in 1804 and he published anatomical treatises. He was the son of Revd Dr John Burns, a minister of the Barony Church, and Elizabeth Stevenson. Of his brothers, Dr John Burns (1775–1850) became Regius Professor of Surgery at the University of Glasgow; James was a shipowner and George was his partner in G & J Burns. Allan Burns commenced medical study at fourteen under his brother, John Burns. In 1804 he went to London to seek medical service in the army, and was induced to go to St. Petersburg to take charge of a hospital about to be established by the Empress Catherine on the English plan; but finding the position uncongenial, he returned to Scotland in a few months. James Walker (engineer)
James Walker (14 September 1781 – 8 October 1862) was an influential British civil engineer. Life Born in Law Wynd in Falkirk, the eldest of five children of John Walker and his wife Margaret, James was educated at the local school and was sent to Glasgow University in October 1794, aged 13. He studied Latin and Greek for two years, and logic during his third year. During his final two years he studied natural philosophy and mathematics, taking the first prize. He returned to Falkirk in May 1799, aged 18, and his family discussed a career in business or law. But, by chance, in the summer of 1800, he was asked to accompany his ill brother-in-law on a sea journey to London. Once there, he visited his uncle Ralph Walker in Blackwall, intending to return to Scotland after a week. However, Ralph discussed his work at the West India Docks, and was so impressed by his young nephew's grasp of engineering that he immediately took him on as his apprentice.
