Knut Helle
Knut Helle (19 December 1930 – 27 June 2015) was a Norwegian historian. A professor at the University of Bergen from 1973 to 2000, he specialized in the late medieval history of Norway. He has contributed to several large works. Early life, education and marriage He was born in Larvik as the son of school inspector Hermann Olai Helle (1893–1973) and teacher Berta Marie Malm (1906–1991). He was the older brother of politician Ingvar Lars Helle. The family moved to Hetland when Knut Helle was seventeen years old. He took the examen artium in Stavanger in 1949, and a teacher's education in Kristiansand in 1952. He studied philology in Oslo and Bergen, and graduated with the cand.philol. degree in 1957. His paper ''Omkring Bǫglungasǫgur'', on the Bagler sagas, was printed in 1959. In December 1957 he married Karen Blauuw, who would later become a professor. Anders Porsanger
Anders Porsanger (1735 – 10 October 1780) was a Sámi linguist and the first Sámi who received a higher education. In 1752, he was invited to assist professor Knud Leem in his efforts to create a Sámi dictionary, all the while pursuing his studies at the Trondheim Cathedral School. Porsanger continued his theological education in Copenhagen and successfully completed it in 1761. In the same year, he was designated a missionary to Varanger. In 1764, Porsanger returned to Trondheim to provide further support to Knud Leem while concurrently serving as a hospital priest. In 1769, the College of Mission in Copenhagen summoned him to address a proposal from the Hungarian Jesuit scientist-priest János Sajnovics. This proposal suggested that the Hungarian alphabet should be employed for writing in the Sámi language. Sajnovics and astronomer Maximilian Hell's visit to Vadsø in order to observe the Venus transit in 1769 revealed that Sámi and Hungarian shared linguistic roots. Porsa ... Jens Boalth
Jens Boalth (8 March 1725 – 5 December 1780) was a Norwegian educator. He was Rector at the Bergen Cathedral School and a driving force behind cultural development in Bergen, Norway. He was born in Christiania (now Oslo, Norway). He was the son of Larsen Boalth (1697–1744 and Anne Cathrine Pedersdatter Kolding (1695–1765). He grew up in a wealthy merchant family and attended Christiania Cathedral School. In 1742, he entered the University of Copenhagen, where he relieved his theological degree in 1745 and took a Magister degree in 1750. From 1756, he was Rector at the Bergen Cathedral School. In total, he was an educator at the school for more than 20 years. He co-founded the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in 1765 and the Philharmonic Drawing School in 1772. The ''Great Norwegian Encyclopedia'' ( no, Store Norske Leksikon, abbreviated ''SNL''), is a Norwegian-language online encyclopedia. The online encyclopedia is among the most-read Norwegian published sites, with more than two million unique visitors per month. Paper editions 1978–2007 The ''SNL'' was created in 1978, when the two publishing houses Aschehoug and Gyldendal merged their encyclopedias and created the company Kunnskapsforlaget. Up until 1978 the two publishing houses of Aschehoug and Gyldendal, Norway's two largest, had published ' and ', respectively. The respective first editions were published in 1907–1913 (Aschehoug) and 1933–1934 (Gyldendal). Carl Deichman
Carl Deichman (1705 – 21 April 1780) was a Norwegian businessman, industrialist, book collector and philanthropist. His endowment lead to the founding of the Oslo Public Library officially known as Deichman Library (''Deichmanske bibliotek''). Biography Deichman was born in Viborg, Denmark. He grew up in Oslo, Christiania (now Oslo), Norway. He was one of the six children of Bartholomæus Deichman (1671–1731), Bishop of Christiania and Else Rosemeyer (ca. 1669-1745). He received his early education at home and was taught Latin, language, history and political science. He was first employed in 1726 at the court of King Frederick IV of Denmark, Frederick IV in Copenhagen. In 1733, he was appointed Chancellor and assessor in the court trial in Christiania.
