Frederick III Of Denmark
Frederick III ( da, Frederik; 18 March 1609 – 9 February 1670) was King of Denmark and Norway from 1648 until his death in 1670. He also governed under the name Frederick II as diocesan administrator (colloquially referred to as prince-bishop) of the Prince-Bishopric of Verden (1623–29 and again 1634–44), and the Prince-Archbishopric of Bremen (1635–45). The second-eldest son of Christian IV and Anne Catherine of Brandenburg, Frederick was only considered an heir to the throne after the death of his older brother Prince Christian in 1647. He instituted absolute monarchy in Denmark-Norway in 1660, confirmed by law in 1665 as the first in Western historiography. He also ordered the creation of the Throne Chair of Denmark. In order to be elected king after the death of his father, Frederick conceded significant influence to the nobility. As king, he fought two wars against Sweden. Swedish Gold Coast
The Swedish Gold Coast ( sv, Svenska Guldkusten) was a colony of the Swedish Africa Company founded in 1650 by Hendrik Carloff on the Gulf of Guinea in present-day Ghana in Africa. Under foreign occupation for much of its existence, it disappeared for good in April 1663 when it became part of the Dutch Gold Coast. History Following the foundation of the Swedish Africa Company (1649) by Louis de Geer an expedition under the command of Hendrik Carloff was sent to Africa in 1650. Carloff made a treaty with the Akan ''King of Futu'' (also ''Feta'') on selling some areas of land. On 22 April 1650 the Swedish Gold Coast was founded and Carloff became its first administrator. Danish Gold Coast
The Danish Gold Coast ( da, Danske Guldkyst or ''Dansk Guinea'') comprised the colonies that Denmark–Norway controlled in Africa as a part of the Gold Coast (roughly present-day southeast Ghana), which is on the Gulf of Guinea. It was colonized by the Dano-Norwegian fleet, first under indirect rule by the Danish West India Company (a chartered company), later as a crown colony of the kingdom of Denmark-Norway. The five Danish Gold Coast Territorial Settlements and forts of the Kingdom of Denmark were sold to the United Kingdom and were incorporated into the British Gold Coast in 1850. The area under Danish influence was over 10,000 square kilometres. Thomas Bartholin
Thomas Bartholin (; Onomastic Latinizatio, Latinized as ''Thomas Bartholinus''; 20 October 1616 – 4 December 1680) was a Denmark, Danish physician, mathematician, and theology, theologian. He is best known for his work in the discovery of the lymphatic system in humans and for his advancements of the theory of refrigeration anesthesia, being the first to describe it scientifically. Thomas Bartholin came from a family that has become famous for its pioneering scientists, twelve of whom became professors at the University of Copenhagen. Esaias Fleischer (pharmacist)
Esaias Fleischer (c.1586 – 13 January 1663) was a Danish pharmacist. He hailed from Silesia, and migrated to Denmark in the early 17th century. He is known as a pharmacist at least from 1613. In 1619 he was given the right to open a pharmacy in Bergen in the Province of Norway, but he probably did not take the offer. He continued his career in Copenhagen, and served as pharmacist for the Danish Royal Court from 1633 to 1639. In 1650 his pharmacy privilege was made heritable, and his son Gregorius Fleischer inherited the pharmacy. Another son Esaias Fleischer became a notable clergyman. Esaias Fleischer was married twice, last to Maren Hansdatter, a sister of Hans Nansen Hans Nansen (28 November 1598 – 12 November 1667) was a Danish statesman. Philip of Schleswig-Holstein-Glücksburg (15 March 1584 – 27 September 1663) was the first Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Glücksburg after the death of his father in 1622. He was the son of John II, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg and Duchess Elisabeth of Brunswick-Grubenhagen. On the death of his brother Duke Christian of Schleswig-Holstein at Ærø in 1633, he inherited that island, as well as the town of Koping (Ærøskøbing), the district of Wuderup (Vodrup) and the domain of Gravenstein (Gråsten). That year, however, he ceded the last to his elder brother Frederick, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sønderburg-Norburg, who had remained landless until he inherited Norburg in 1624 upon the death of their elder brother, Duke John Adolf. Frederick, however, returned Gravenstein to Philip in 1635 or 1636. Christoffer Urne
Christoffer Knudsson Urne til Årsmarke (27 October 1593 – 27 September 1663) was a Danish civil servant. He served as Governor-general of Norway from 1629 to 1642. Biography He was born at Halsted Priory on the island of Lolland, Denmark. He was the son of Knud Axelsen Urne til Årsmarke (1564–1622) and Margrethe Eilersdatter Grubbe til Alslev (1568–1654). He was a brother-in-law of Ove Gjedde who married his sister Dorothy Knudsdatter Urne (1600-1667). He attended Sorø Academy 1605-09 and studied 6 years in Europe with his brothers. He became secretary of the chancellor of Denmark until he became a treasurer in 1617, which he remained until 1627. In 1627 was granted supervision of Nykøbing and Ålholm and made commissioner-general of the market towns of Lolland and Falster. He served as Steward of Norway from 1629 to 1642.
