15th Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly
The 15th Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly was the 23rd sitting legislature or council in Northwest Territories history. It lasted from 2003 until September 3, 2007. The primary membership was elected in the 2003 Northwest Territories general election. There were two by-elections conducted during the interim. Joe Handley was Premier. 2003 Northwest Territories General Election
The 2003 Northwest Territories general election was held on November 24, 2003, to elect the 19 members of the Legislative Assembly. The election was called on October 27. Premier Stephen Kakfwi had previously chosen not to run. The territory operates on a consensus government system with no political parties; the premier is subsequently chosen by and from the Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs). There were 21,474 registered voters at the time of the election. Issues Issues at the election included: *devolution of federal powers, *the method of choosing the premier, *the alcohol abuse and suicide problems, *shortage of medical professionals and affordable housing; *school crowding, *the $85-million deficit; *sharing of profits from mining and oil and gas development. Michael Miltenberger
J. Michael Miltenberger (born March 17, 1951 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) is a former carpenter and a former territorial level politician from northern Canada. Early life J. Michael Miltenberger was born in Ottawa. His family moved to Northern Canada in 1962. He attended post secondary education at the University of Lethbridge and Arctic College. Political career Miltenberger began his political career on the municipal level. He served on the town council including two years as mayor for the town of Fort Smith, Northwest Territories from 1983 to 1989. Miltenberger first ran for a seat in the Northwest Territories Legislature in the 1995 Northwest Territories general election. He defeated former speaker and cabinet minister Jeannie Marie-Jewell to win his first term in office. He ran for re-election in the 1999 general election defeating Marie-Jewell for the second time. Michael McLeod (born September 6, 1959) is a Canadian politician, currently serving as a member of Parliament representing the Northwest Territories. He was first elected in the 2015 Canadian federal election, unseating Dennis Bevington, who was the incumbent New Democratic Party MP for the riding. McLeod was a former member of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories, Canada, as well as the former mayor of Fort Providence. Political career McLeod was born in Fort Providence, Northwest Territories. When he was 22, he served as a mayor of Fort Providence after being chosen by the local Dene council. Sandy Lee (born 1964) is a South Korean-born-Canadian lawyer and politician, who was a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories from 1999 to 2011. Political career Territorial Assembly Lee was elected to the legislature for the first time in the 1999 Northwest Territories general election, defeating future MLA Dave Ramsay and another candidate. She was re-elected to her second term in office in the 2003 Northwest Territories general election, winning with a landslide 80 per cent of the vote. Robert Hawkins is an engineering technologist and a former municipal and territorial level politician from Northwest Territories, Canada. Early life Hawkins moved to Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories in 1977 as a child. Hawkins moved to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories in 1987 to begin schooling at Sir John Franklin High School.
