Trajan ( ; la, Caesar Nerva Traianus; 18 September 539/11 August 117) was Roman emperor from 98 to 117. Officially declared ''optimus princeps'' ("best ruler") by the senate, Trajan is remembered as a successful soldier-emperor who presided over one of the greatest military expansions in Roman history and led the empire to attain its greatest territorial extent by the time of his death. Bartolomé Román
Bartolomé Román (c. 1587 – 1647) was a Spanish Baroque painter known for his series of archangels. Early life and career Born in Montoro, he was a disciple of Vincenzo Carducci, according to information provided by the art historian Antonio Palomino. The first canvas hand signed by Román, currently at the Museo del Prado, dated 1616. Three years later is a document that promised to produce a copy of a picture that he gave at the time of signature, which reveals both Román and Carducci securing the principals and, in the case of Román and other minor painters, recorded dependence of others, as seen also in some of his most famous works. In 1628 he signed the large canvas of the ''Parable of the Wedding'' for the sacristy of the Royal Convent of La Encarnación in Madrid, which Palomino notes the influence of Diego Velázquez, established in Madrid shortly before. In the same monastery Madrid remains a painting of ''El Salvador'', in the past attributed to Carducci, very ...

George Jamesone
George Jamesone (or Jameson) (c. 1587 – 1644) was a Scottish painter who is regarded as Scotland's first eminent portrait-painter. Early years He was born in Aberdeen, where his father, Andrew Jamesone, was a stonemason. Jamesone attended the grammar school near his home on Schoolhill and is thought to have gone on to further education at Marischal College. Legend has it that Jamesone once studied under Rubens in Antwerp with Anthony van Dyck. This is, however, yet to be proven as his name does not appear to be noted on the Guild registers of the town. Since Rubens was exempt from registering pupils, the absence of Jamesone's name does not mean that the painter definitely did not study there. Jamesone certainly did complete an apprenticeship under the supervision of his uncle, John Anderson, who was a popular decorative painter in Edinburgh at the beginning of the seventeenth century. Jamesone finished this training in 1618. He is not recorded as being in Aberdeen again un ...
