Pope Julius II
Pope Julius II ( la, Iulius II; it, Giulio II; born Giuliano della Rovere; 5 December 144321 February 1513) was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 1503 to his death in February 1513. Nicknamed the Warrior Pope or the Fearsome Pope, he chose his papal name not in honour of Pope Julius I but in emulation of Julius Caesar. One of the most powerful and influential popes, Julius II was a central figure of the High Renaissance and left a significant cultural and political legacy. As a result of his policies during the Italian Wars, the Papal States increased its power and centralization, and the office of the papacy continued to be crucial, diplomatically and politically, during the entirety of the 16th century in Italy and Europe. The ''Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints'' (Young Baptist and Saints Peter, Catherine, Lucy, and Paul), also known as the ''Colonna Altarpiece'', is a painting by the Italian High Renaissance artist Raphael, executed ''c.'' 1503-1505. It is housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York City. It is the only altarpiece by Raphael in the United States. The collection of Metropolitan Museum of Art also contains a painting of the ''Agony in the Garden'' from the predella of the altarpiece. ''Scenes from Tebaldeo's Eclogues'' is a set of four small square oil on panel paintings by Andrea Previtali, executed between 1505 and 1510, now in the National Gallery, London. They show scenes from the Ferrarese writer Antonio Tebaldeo's eclogue on the life of Damon of Athens, featuring his friend Thyrsis and Damon's love for Amaryllis. They were probably originally part of a piece of furniture for a rich Venetian noble family. Mauro Zanchi, ''Andrea Previtali il colore prospettico di maniera belliniana'', Ferrari Editrice, 2001, pages 17-21. Andrea Previtali
Andrea Previtali (c. 1480 –1528) was an Italian painter of the Renaissance period, active mainly in Bergamo. He was also called Andrea Cordelliaghi. Biography Previtali was a pupil of the painter Giovanni Bellini. In Bergamo, he painted a ''John the Baptist preaching with other saints'' (1515) for the church of Santo Spirito, a ''San Benedetto and other saints'' for Bergamo Cathedral, and a ''Deposition from the Cross'' for Sant'Andrea. Other works of his are in the Accademia Carrara. and the National Gallery, London ('' Salvator Mundi'' and '' The Virgin and Child with a Shoot of Olive'', both left to the gallery in 1910). Previtali gained notice in 1937 in the United Kingdom for "not being Giorgione". The ''Portrait of Bishop Bernardo de' Rossi'' is an oil-on-panel painting by the Italian High Renaissance painter Lorenzo Lotto, dating to 1505. It is housed in the National Museum of Capodimonte of Naples, southern Italy. The work dates to Lotto's stay in Treviso, and featured a cover with title, signature and dates, identified as the '' Allegory of Virtues and Vices'' now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, United States. The portrait was brought to Parma by Bernardo de' Rossi when he fled there in 1524. Here it became part of the Farnese collection, which was transferred to Naples in 1760. Lorenzo Lotto (c. 1480 – 1556/57) was an Italian Painting, painter, draughtsman, and illustrator, traditionally placed in the Venetian school (art), Venetian school, though much of his career was spent in other north Italian cities. ''The Battle of Anghiari'' (1505) was a planned painting by Leonardo da Vinci in the Salone dei Cinquecento (Hall of the Five Hundred) in the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence. Its central scene would have depicted four men riding raging war horses engaged in a battle for possession of a standard at the Battle of Anghiari in 1440. Many preparatory studies by Leonardo still exist. The composition of the central section is best known through a drawing by Peter Paul Rubens in the Louvre, Paris.
