13th General Assembly Of Newfoundland
The members of the 13th General Assembly of Newfoundland were elected in the Newfoundland general election held in November 1878. The general assembly sat from 1879 to 1882. The Conservative Party led by William Whiteway formed the government. A.J.W. McNeilly was chosen as speaker. Sir John Hawley Glover served as colonial governor of Newfoundland until 1881. Henry Berkeley Fitzhardinge Maxse succeeded Glover as governor. Colonial Building
The Colonial Building is a historic government building located in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The building was the home of the colonial and later provincial Newfoundland and Labrador, Newfoundland government and the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly, House of Assembly from January 28, 1850 to July 28, 1959. In 1974, it was declared a Provincial Historic Site. In 1832 when the Colony of Newfoundland governed itself by representative government there was not a formal building assigned to house the legislature. The first home of the Legislature was a tavern and Public house, lodging house on Duckworth Street owned and operated by a Mrs. Mary Widdicombe Travers, Mary Travers. The stay was brief as in the legislature's haste and inexperience it forgot to vote approval for the funds to pay rent. The first building was destroyed in city fire of 1846. Patrick Nowlan (ca 1827 – 1896) was a merchant and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented Harbour Main from 1859 to 1865 and from 1873 to 1882 in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly. He was born in Burgeo Burgeo ( ) is a town in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is located mainly on Grandy Island, on the south coast of the island of Newfoundland. Harbour Main, formerly Harbour Main-Whitbourne and Harbour Main-Bell Island, is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Prior to 1975, the district elected two MHAs. Between 1972 and the year 2000, it was a Tory stronghold, apart from a two-term Liberal breakthrough in the 1990s. It includes the southern portion of the town of Conception Bay South and the town of Holyrood, the farthest extern of the St. John's Metropolitan Area. Joseph Ignatius Little
Sir Joseph Ignatius Little (1835 14 July 1902) was a lawyer, politician, and judge in the Newfoundland Colony. Biography Little was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, the son of Cornelius Little and Brigid (née Costin). He was a lawyer by profession, and was called to the Newfoundland Bar in 1859. Elected to the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly for Harbour Main in an 1867 by-election, he was attorney general 1870–75 in the cabinet of Charles Fox Bennett, and was a minister without portfolio in the cabinet of William Whiteway. In 1883 he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Newfoundland, and became Chief Justice in 1898. He was knighted in the 1901 Birthday Honours list, effective from 19 December 1901. Charles Dawe
Charles Dawe (February 28, 1845 – March 29, 1908) was a merchant and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented Harbour Grace from 1878 to 1889 and Port de Grave from 1893 to 1900 and from 1906 to 1908 as a Conservative. He was born in Port de Grave. Dawe was a sealing captain and operated a fishery supply business in Bay Roberts with his brother Azariah. He was a Liberal supporter until 1885. He served in the province's Executive Council as a minister without portfolio in 1894 and from 1897 to 1889. Dawe was defeated when he ran for reelection in 1889. Ambrose Shea
Sir Ambrose Shea (17 September 1815 – 30 July 1905) was a political and business figure in colonial Newfoundland who later served as Governor of the Bahamas. He was one of two Newfoundland delegates to the Quebec Conference that led to Canadian confederation. Life Shea was born in St. John's, Newfoundland Colony, the fifth son of Henry Shea and Eleanor Ryan. His father had emigrated from County Tipperary, Ireland. Ambrose Shea worked for a time on ''The Newfoundlander'', a family-owned newspaper, before going into business for himself. By the 1850s, he was a successful merchant who also dealt in insurance, and acted as the agent for the transatlantic steamer trade. He continued to operate the business during most of his political career. James Oliphant Fraser (October 2, 1826 – February 14, 1904) was a businessman and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented Fortune Bay in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 1878 to 1885. Daniel Joseph Greene
Daniel Joseph Greene (1850 – December 12, 1911) was a Newfoundland politician who briefly served as the colony's Premier. A native of St. John's, he studied law at Laval University and became a lawyer. Daniel Greene was first elected to the House of Assembly in 1875 and became Leader of the Opposition in 1887. In 1889 he became a minister in the government of Liberal Premier Sir William Whiteway. A year after the controversial 1893 elections Whiteway's government was dismissed by the governor Arthur Murray due to petitions alleging corrupt electoral practices. Murray appointed Tory leader Augustus F. Goodridge as the new premier and helped the minority government stay in office. However, Goodridge resigned in December 1894 after the collapse of two banks. Greene had become acting Liberal leader due to the disbarment of Whiteway from holding electoral office.
