Joseph Ignatius Little
Sir Joseph Ignatius Little (1835 14 July 1902) was a lawyer, politician, and judge in the Newfoundland Colony. Biography Little was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, the son of Cornelius Little and Brigid (née Costin). He was a lawyer by profession, and was called to the Newfoundland Bar in 1859. Elected to the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly for Harbour Main in an 1867 by-election, he was attorney general 1870–75 in the cabinet of Charles Fox Bennett, and was a minister without portfolio in the cabinet of William Whiteway. In 1883 he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Newfoundland, and became Chief Justice in 1898. He was knighted in the 1901 Birthday Honours list, effective from 19 December 1901. Charlottetown
Charlottetown is the capital and largest city of the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island, and the county seat of Queens County. Named after Queen Charlotte, Charlottetown was an unincorporated town until it was incorporated as a city in 1855. It was the site of the famous Charlottetown Conference in 1864, the first gathering of Canadian and Maritime statesmen to discuss the proposed Maritime Union. This conference led, instead, to the union of British North American colonies in 1867, which was the beginning of the Canadian confederation. PEI, however, did not join Confederation until 1873. From this, the city adopted as its motto ''Cunabula Foederis'', "Birthplace of Confederation". Dictionary Of Canadian Biography
The ''Dictionary of Canadian Biography'' (''DCB''; french: Dictionnaire biographique du Canada) is a dictionary of biographical entries for individuals who have contributed to the history of Canada. The ''DCB'', which was initiated in 1959, is a collaboration between the University of Toronto and Laval University. Fifteen volumes have so far been published with more than 8,400 biographies of individuals who died or whose last known activity fell between the years 1000 and 1930. The entire print edition is online, along with some additional biographies to the year 2000. William Henry Horwood
Sir William Henry Horwood (November 5, 1862 – April 7, 1945) was a politician and the Chief Justice of Newfoundland and Labrador from 1902 to 1944. He represented Trinity from 1894 to 1897 and from 1900 to 1902 and Harbour Grace from 1897 to 1900 in the Newfoundland House of Assembly. Born in St. John's, Horwood was educated at Bishop Feild College and went on to study law. He was called to the Newfoundland bar in 1885. In 1895, he was named Queen's Counsel. He was first elected to the Newfoundland assembly in a by-election held in 1894. Horwood was a member of the Executive Council from 1894 to 1897 and from 1900 to 1902. He was Colonial Secretary from 1894 to 1895 and Minister of Justice and Attorney General from 1900 to 1902. In 1895, he was a Newfoundland delegate to a conference in Ottawa to discuss confederation with Canada. Horwood resigned from cabinet and the assembly upon being named Chief Justice in July 1902. Frederick Carter
Sir Frederick Bowker Terrington Carter, (February 12, 1819 – March 1, 1900) was a lawyer and Premier of Newfoundland from 1865 to 1870 and from 1874 to 1878. Career Carter was the son of Peter Weston Carter''Volume one, p. 363, Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador'', . grandson of William Carter and great-grandson of Robert Carter, who was appointed justice of the peace at Ferryland in 1750. In 1855, he was elected to the House of Assembly as a Conservative and was Speaker from 1861 to 1865. In 1865 he succeeded Sir Hugh Hoyles as Prime Minister. Carter was a supporter of Canadian confederation having been a delegate to the 1864 Quebec conference. However, the Conservatives were defeated on the Confederation issue in the November 1869 election by the Anti-Confederation Party led by Charles Fox Bennett. The Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador is the superior court for the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Supreme Court has jurisdiction to hear appeals in both criminal and civil matters from the Provincial Court and designated boards and administrative tribunals.
