The 12th Illinois Infantry Regiment, also known as the 1st Scotch Regiment, was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army between May 2, 1861 and July 18, 1865, during the American Civil War. Service Initial 3 month service The infantry regiment was organized at Springfield, Illinois and mustered in on May 2, 1861 for a three-month service. The regiment was transferred to Cairo, Illinois, for garrison duty until August 1861. The 65th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry, nicknamed the "Second Scotch Regiment" was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment mustered into service in May 1862 and was captured at the Battle of Harper's Ferry. After being paroled and exchanged, the regiment was sent to Kentucky and assigned to the XXIII Corps. The regiment participated in the Knoxville campaign, the Atlanta campaign, the Franklin–Nashville campaign, and the Carolinas campaign. The soldiers were mustered out in July 1865. John McArthur (general)
John McArthur (November 17, 1826 – May 15, 1906) was a Union general during the American Civil War. McArthur became one of the ablest Federal commanders in the Western Theater.Daniel, p. 221. Early life McArthur was born in Erskine, Scotland. He learned to be a blacksmith and emigrated to the United States at age 23 and settled in Chicago.
