124th Maine Senate (2008-2010)
Below is the list of the 124th Maine Senate, which was sworn into office on December 3, 2008 and left office in December 2010. On December 3, Libby Mitchell (D-Kennebec) was the only candidate nominated for President of the Maine Senate and was subsequently elected Senate President. The 124th Senate consisted of 21 Democrats and 14 Republicans. In April 2009, the Maine Senate approved LD 1020 with a 21-14 vote. The bill if enacted allowed same-sex couples to marry. The bill ultimately passed the Maine Legislature as a whole and was signed by Governor John Baldacci before being repealed via a people's veto in November 2009. Maine Senate
The Maine Senate is the upper house of the Maine Legislature, the state legislature of the U.S. state of Maine. The Senate currently consists of 35 members representing an equal number of districts across the state, though the Maine Constitution allows for "an odd number of Senators, not less than 31 nor more than 35". Unlike the lower House, the Senate does not set aside nonvoting seats for Native tribes. Because it is a part-time position, members of the Maine Senate usually have outside employment as well. The Senate meets at the Maine State House in Augusta. Members are limited to four consecutive terms with each term being two years but may run again after a two-year wait. Saco is a city in York County, Maine, York County, Maine, United States. The population was 20,381 at the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census. William Diamond
G. William Diamond (born 1945) is an American Democratic politician, educator, small business owner, legislator and former Maine Secretary of State. Diamond currently serves in the Maine Senate representing Senate District 26, which comprises the towns of Windham, Raymond, Standish, Casco, Baldwin and Frye Island. Diamond served in the Maine House of Representatives from 1977 to 1982, was the Maine Secretary of State from 1989 to 1997, and has served in the Maine Senate from 1982 to 1986, from 2004 to 2012 and from 2018 to the present. Gerald Davis (politician)
Gerald M. Davis (born 1936) is an American politician from Maine. Career Davis, a Republican from Falmouth, represented District 11 in the Maine Senate from 2008 to 2010. He was defeated for re-election in 2010 by unenrolled (independent) Richard Woodbury of Yarmouth. Davis' Senate district covered part of Cumberland County, specifically Chebeague Island, Cumberland, Falmouth, Gray, Long Island, North Yarmouth and Yarmouth. Brunswick is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 21,756 at the 2020 United States Census. Stanley J. 'Stan' Gerzofsky (born December 18, 1944) is an American politician from the state of Maine. A Brunswick resident, Gerzofsky represented the 10th Senate District. He was first elected to the Maine House of Representatives representing Brunswick in 2000 and served in the House until he was term-limited out in 2008, when he ran for the State Senate. Joseph Brannigan
Joseph C. Brannigan (July 16, 1931 – January 17, 2015) was an American social worker and politician from Maine. Brannigan served as a Democratic State Senator from Maine's 10th District, representing part of Portland and Westbrook. Prior to joining the State Senate, he represented part of suburban Portland in District 117 from 2000 to 2006 in the Maine House of Representatives. Education and career Brannigan studied at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service from 1951 to 1955. After graduating, he attended Saint John's Seminary in Boston, Massachusetts, where he later became an ordained priest. Justin Alfond
Justin Loring Alfond (born January 8, 1975) is an American politician and real estate developer. He served as a Democratic State Senator from the 8th District, which represents much of Portland. Alfond was first elected to the State Senate in 2008 to replace Democrat Ethan Strimling; he beat former State Senator Anne Rand and Cliff Ginn. He was re-elected in 2010 and 2012. In 2012, he faced Green Independent Party Chair Asher Platts. Alfond won with 71% of the vote in a two-way race. A Democrat, he served in the Maine House of Representatives (2000–2008) and the Maine Senate (2008–2011).
