11th General Assembly Of Newfoundland
The members of the 11th General Assembly of Newfoundland were elected in the 1873 Newfoundland general election, Newfoundland general election held in November 1873. The general assembly sat from February 1874 to Fall 1874. The Anti-Confederation Party led by Charles Fox Bennett won the election. However, defections and resignations before the assembly's opening reduced his party to a minority and Frederick Carter formed the government in 1874. Prescott Emerson was chosen as speaker. Colonial Building
The Colonial Building is a historic government building located in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The building was the home of the colonial and later provincial Newfoundland and Labrador, Newfoundland government and the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly, House of Assembly from January 28, 1850 to July 28, 1959. In 1974, it was declared a Provincial Historic Site. In 1832 when the Colony of Newfoundland governed itself by representative government there was not a formal building assigned to house the legislature. The first home of the Legislature was a tavern and Public house, lodging house on Duckworth Street owned and operated by a Mrs. Mary Widdicombe Travers, Mary Travers. The stay was brief as in the legislature's haste and inexperience it forgot to vote approval for the funds to pay rent. The first building was destroyed in city fire of 1846. John Rorke
John Rorke (9 June 1807 – 13 August 1896) was an Irish-born merchant and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented Carbonear in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 1863 to 1882 as a Conservative and Confederate. He was born in Athlone and came to Newfoundland in 1824, working as a clerk for Bennett and Ridley, a fishery supply firm. In 1830, he established his own firm in Carbonear Carbonear is a town on the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Robert John Parsons
Robert John Parsons (c. 1802 – June 20, 1883) was a journalist and politician in Newfoundland. He represented St. John's East in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 1843 to 1874. He was born in Harbour Grace. Parsons apprenticed as a printer with the ''Royal Gazette'' in St. John's and was foreman in Henry David Winton Henry David Winton (June 10, 1793 – January 6, 1855) was an English-born printer and newspaper owner in Newfoundland. The son of Reverend Robert Winton, he was born in Withycombe Raleigh, Exmouth. He was an apprentice to a printer and bookbin ...'s printing office for six years. John Joseph Dearin
John Joseph Dearin (ca 1818 – July 25, 1890) was a pharmacist and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented St. John's East St. John's East (french: St. John's-Est; formerly known as St. John's North) is a federal electoral district in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, that has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada since 1949. It covers a part of St ... in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 1873 to 1878, from 1882 to 1885 and from 1889 to 1890. He was born in St. John's, the son of William Dearin and Elizabeth King. Dearin apprenticed with a pharmacist in St. John's and then worked in Harbour Grace. He returned to St. John's where he opened an apothecary shop with his brother in the 1840s. Dearin also practised as a dentist. He opposed union with Canada. John Bartlett (Newfoundland Politician)
John Bartlett (c. 1841 – July 15, 1925) was a mariner and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented Port de Grave in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 1873 to 1874 and from 1882 to 1886. He was born in Brigus. Bartlett was a master mariner and sealing captain. Henry Renouf
Henry Renouf (1820 – March 18, 1880) was an educator, judge and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented St. John's West from 1861 to 1869 and Placentia and St. Mary's from 1869 to 1873 in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly. He was born in St. John's, the son of John Renouf and Johanna Little. He worked in the family business for a time, later opening a private academy in St. John's. Patrick Nowlan (ca 1827 – 1896) was a merchant and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented Harbour Main from 1859 to 1865 and from 1873 to 1882 in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly. Harbour Main
Harbour Main, formerly Harbour Main-Whitbourne and Harbour Main-Bell Island, is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Prior to 1975, the district elected two MHAs. Between 1972 and the year 2000, it was a Tory stronghold, apart from a two-term Liberal breakthrough in the 1990s. It includes the southern portion of the town of Conception Bay South and the town of Holyrood, the farthest extern of the St. John's Metropolitan Area. Joseph Ignatius Little
Sir Joseph Ignatius Little (1835 14 July 1902) was a lawyer, politician, and judge in the Newfoundland Colony. Biography Little was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, the son of Cornelius Little and Brigid (née Costin). He was a lawyer by profession, and was called to the Newfoundland Bar in 1859. Elected to the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly for Harbour Main in an 1867 by-election, he was attorney general 1870–75 in the cabinet of Charles Fox Bennett, and was a minister without portfolio in the cabinet of William Whiteway. In 1883 he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Newfoundland, and became Chief Justice in 1898. He was knighted in the 1901 Birthday Honours list, effective from 19 December 1901.
