10th Mountain Brigade (Ukraine)
The 10th Mountain Assault Brigade is a mountain warfare brigade of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. It is part of Operational Command West and is based in Kolomyia. Formed in late 2015, the brigade fought in the war in Donbas between May and November 2016, defending positions around Marinka. It again deployed to the Donbas in September 2017, defending positions around Popasna. During the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine the brigade fought around Mariupol in February 2022 and in December 2022 in Bakhmut. History The brigade was formed on 30 October 2015 in Koloymia, part of Operational Command West. It included the 24th Separate Assault Battalion, the former Aidar Battalion. The brigade's first commander was Colonel and Hero of Ukraine Vasyl Zubanych, a former battalion commander in the 128th Mechanized Brigade. Mountain Warfare
Mountain warfare (also known as alpine warfare) is warfare in mountains or similarly rough terrain. Mountain ranges are of strategic importance since they often act as a natural border, and may also be the origin of a water source (for example, the Golan Heights). Attacking a prepared enemy position in mountain terrain generally requires a greater ratio of attacking soldiers to defending soldiers than a war conducted on level ground. Hoverla
Mount Hoverla (Ukrainian and rue, Говерла, Hoverla), at , is the highest mountain in Ukraine and part of the Carpathian Mountains (Ukrainian Carpathians). The mountain is located in the Eastern Beskids, in the Chornohora region. The slopes are covered with beech and spruce forests, above which there is a belt of sub-alpine meadows called '' polonyna'' in Ukrainian. At the eastern slope there is the main spring of the Prut River. The name is of Hungarian origin and means 'snow fortress'. Hoverla is composed of sandstone, a sedimentary rock type. The date of the first ascent is unknown. In late 19th century the mountain became a notable tourist attraction, especially among tourists from nearby cities of Galicia. 54th Mechanized Brigade (Ukraine)
The 54th Mechanized Brigade is a brigade of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, part of Operational Command East. The brigade is based in Bakhmut and was formed in 2014. The brigade fought in the war in Donbas and the Russian Invasion of Ukraine. History Between 18 and 22 December 2016, the brigade fought in the Battle of Svitlodarsk. The fighting began with a pro-Russian separatist attack against the 54th's positions. The brigade counterattacked the separatist flank and captured new positions. During the fighting, nine of the brigade's soldiers were killed and 35 were wounded. Press reports at the time described the action as the bloodiest in the preceding five months. The Georgian Legion fought in eastern Ukraine under the overall command of the 54th Mechanized Brigade. The 53rd Separate Mechanized Brigade named after Volodymyr Monomakh is a brigade of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. The brigade is subordinated to Operational Command East. Krasnohorivka
Krasnohorivka (, ; ) is a city in Donetsk Oblast (province) of Ukraine. Population: ; 16,714 (2001). History The town was founded in the first half of the 19th century by migrants from the Ukrainian villages of Poltava Governorate and Kharkov Governorate. Starting mid-April 2014 pro-Russian separatists captured several towns in Donetsk Oblast; including Krasnohorivka. On 1 August 2014 Ukrainian forces had liberated the city from pro-Russian separatists. The town then became situated close to the frontline with the separatist-controlled Donetsk.
