The 10th Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan was elected in the Saskatchewan general election held in June 1944. The assembly sat from October 19, 1944, to May 19, 1948. The Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) led by Tommy Douglas formed the government. The Liberal Party led by William John Patterson William John Patterson (May 13, 1886 – June 10, 1976) was a Liberal politician and the sixth premier of Saskatchewan from 1935 to 1944. 1944 Saskatchewan General Election
The 1944 Saskatchewan general election was held on June 15, 1944 to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. The election was held six years after the previous election. There is normally a five-year limit on the lifespan of Parliaments and provincial assemblies in Canada, but the emergency brought on by the Second World War allowed the government to delay the election temporarily. It marked the first time a socialist government was elected anywhere in Canada. Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) leader Tommy Douglas became the premier of the province. The CCF won 47 of the 52 seats in the legislature, and over half the popular vote, despite a very negative campaign by the governing Liberal Party. The Liberals, led by William John Patterson, accused Douglas of being a communist. The Liberal popular vote fell by 10 percentage points, and they won only five seats. Cumberland is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, Canada. It was created for the 1912 election, and was abolished into Prince Albert East-Cumberland in 1967. Ben Putnam (January 15, 1886 – 1956) was an American-born farmer and political figure in Saskatchewan. Humboldt (provincial Electoral District)
Humboldt was a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, Canada. Located in central Saskatchewan, this constituency was one of 25 created for the 1st Saskatchewan general election in 1905. Incorporated as a city in 2000, Humboldt (pop. 4,998) was the largest centre in the riding. James Smith Aitken
James Smith Aitken (7 November 1881 – 29 July 1964) was a Scottish-born farmer and political figure in Saskatchewan, Canada. He represented Hanley from 1944 to 1948 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) member. Aitken was born in Pencaitland, East Lothian, Scotland to William Aitken and Jane Smith Aitken. He emigrated to Scotland in 1905,1911 Census of Canada when he purchased a farm near Cheviot, Saskatchewan in 1905. Aitken married Elizabeth Goodale. After his wife's death in 1937, he spent some time in Scotland and New Zealand before returning to Saskatchewan. Henry Edmund Houze
Henry Edmund Houze (August 13, 1880 – March 16, 1959) was a Canadian veterinarian, farmer, rancher and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Gravelbourg from 1944 to 1948 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) member. He was born in Smiths Falls, Ontario and came west in 1908, settling on a homestead near Meyronne, Saskatchewan. Houze married Mabel Forest. He raised Hereford cattle and a few horses. Houze ran unsuccessfully as a Conservative candidate for the Morse seat in the provincial assembly in 1917. He moved into the town of Meyronne in 1937 but continued to farm until 1947. Located in southwestern Saskatchewan, this constituency was centred on the town of Elrose.
