109 Street is an arterial road in central Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It takes travelers out of Downtown to the south to Old Strathcona, and to the north to the Kingsway area. It passes several Edmonton landmarks including the Garneau Theatre, Alberta Legislature Building, MacEwan University, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, RCMP "K" Division Headquarters, and Kingsway Mall. It is a one-way street, southbound, from 97 Avenue, Edmonton, 97 Avenue to Saskatchewan Drive (88 Avenue), to cross the North Saskatchewan River on the narrow High Level Bridge (Edmonton), High Level Bridge. Strathcona, Alberta
Strathcona was a city in Alberta, Canada on the south side of the North Saskatchewan River. Originally founded in 1891, it amalgamated with the City of Edmonton in 1912. History Strathcona's recorded history began in the 1870s. Its first residents were an offshoot of the hangers-on and self-employed contractors who resided near the old Fort Edmonton on the north side of the river. Garneau, Edmonton
Garneau is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city of Edmonton, Canada. Prior to 1912, it was part of the City of Strathcona. It is named after one of its first inhabitants, Laurent Garneau (ca. 1840-1921), a former Manitoba Métis rebel and Hudson's Bay Company employee who with his wife and family settled there around 1874. It is located just west of the Strathcona neighbourhood and just east of the main University of Alberta campus. The neighbourhood overlooks the North Saskatchewan River valley. Queen Alexandra is a mixed residential and commercial neighbourhood in south west Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The neighbourhood, once part of the City of Strathcona, is named for the British queen Alexandra of Denmark. The north edge of the neighbourhood, along Whyte Avenue is part of Old Strathcona, a popular commercial and cultural area of Edmonton. McKernan, Edmonton
McKernan is a neighbourhood located in southwest Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It is named for John McKernan, a prominent businessman in the City of Strathcona whose parents' farm was located there beginning in the late 1870s. "Jack" McKernan (1870-1918) was the force behind the Princess Theatre, which still stands on Whyte Avenue. Allendale is a residential neighbourhood located in south west Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The neighbourhood is named for the Allen family, who owned a farm there. It was annexed by the City of Strathcona in 1907. Residential development in Allendale commenced prior to the end of World War II. Approximately one residence in eleven (9%) were constructed at this time according to the 2001 federal census. Approximately half the residences in the neighbourhood (48.1%) were constructed between the end of World War II and 1960. Whitemud Drive is a major east–west freeway in southern Edmonton, Alberta, that stretches from 231 Street at the western city limit to Anthony Henday Drive just east of Edmonton in Strathcona County. Kingsway, sometimes called Kingsway Avenue, is an arterial road in central Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, that runs on a northwest to southeast path, cutting through the city's normal street grid, grid pattern.
