swisspeace is a practice-oriented peace research institute located in Basel, Switzerland. It aims to contribute to the improvement of conflict prevention and conflict transformation by supporting Swiss and international actors in their peacebuilding activities. History swisspeace was founded in 1988 as the Swiss Peace Foundation with the goal of strengthening independent peace research in Switzerland. Sevim Arbana
Sevim Arbana in an Albanian women's rights activist and founder of NGO “Useful to Albanian Women” (UAW) and "Women Bridge for Peace and Understanding”. Biography Sevim Arbana was born in 1951. Her father was a member of the Liberation Army in Albania ( LANÇ), and fought against the Germans in WWII. Following the war, he joined the anti-communist Legality Party, where he was branded an enemy of the state and imprisoned for 10 years during the rule of Enver Hoxha. Due to her father's beliefs, Arbana's family was persecuted by the Albanian government, resulting in difficulty in completing her education at School of Arts in Tirana. In 1991, Arbana was arrested by the Serbian Militia at a forum in Kosovo, protesting the lack of funding her women's rights organizations were receiving. Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA), meaning "service" in several Indian languages, is a trade union based in Ahmedabad, India, that promotes the rights of low-income, independently employed female workers. With over 1.6 million participating women, SEWA is the largest organization of informal workers in the world (Chen et al. 2015). Self-employed women are defined as those who do not receive a salary like that of formally-employed workers and therefore have a more precarious income and life. SEWA is framed around the goal of full employment in which a woman secures for her family: income, food, health care, child care, and shelter. The principles behind accomplishing these goals are struggle and development, meaning negotiating with stakeholders and providing services, respectively.
