Şahinbey is a district of Gaziantep Province of Turkey named after Şahin Bey (1877-1920), a Turkish National Movement commander. It is part of Gaziantep Metropolitan municipality. The population is 730,562 as of 2010. It is the location of a large amount of student housing for the public University of Gaziantep, as well as the site of two private universities: Zirve and Hasan Kalyoncu. Şahin Bey
Mehmed Said (1877, Gaziantep, Aleppo Vilayet – 28 March 1920), better known as Şahin Bey, was the commander of the Turkish revolutionaries that were stationed in the city of Gaziantep during the Turkish War of Independence. Şahin Bey‘s Family was of Kurdish descent. Ottoman Army Years Beginning in 1899, he started to take active roles at numerous battles for the Ottoman Empire. He was sent to Yemen to fight against the local imams that were trying to take the control of the region from the Ottomans. His efforts would help the Ottoman Empire to control Yemen until its dissolution after World War I. Later, he voluntarily went to Ottoman Tripolitania in 1911 to defend the Ottoman territories against the invading Italian forces. The Turkish National Movement ( tr, Türk Ulusal Hareketi) encompasses the political and military activities of the Turkish revolutionaries that resulted in the creation and shaping of the modern Republic of Turkey, as a consequence of the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in World War I and the subsequent occupation of Constantinople and partitioning of the Ottoman Empire by the Allies under the terms of the Armistice of Mudros. The Zirve University (Turkish ''Zirve Üniversitesi'') was a private university established in 2009, located in Gaziantep, southeastern Anatolia, Turkey. The university had eight faculties. It was a mix-oriented (research and education) institution.
