Étienne-Claude Lagueux
Étienne-Claude Lagueux (October 1765 – August 3, 1842) was a merchant and political figure in Lower Canada. He represented Northumberland in the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada from 1814 to 1824 and from 1827 to 1830. He was born Claude-Joseph Lagueux in Cap-Saint-Ignace, the son of Pierre Lagueux and Marie Tremblay. In 1789, he married Cécile Grihault dit Larivière. Lagueux did not run for reelection in 1824 or in 1830. He died in Quebec City at the age of 76. Lower Canada
The Province of Lower Canada (french: province du Bas-Canada) was a British colony on the lower Saint Lawrence River and the shores of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence (1791–1841). It covered the southern portion of the current Province of Quebec and the Labrador region of the current Province of Newfoundland and Labrador (until the Labrador region was transferred to Newfoundland in 1809). Lower Canada consisted of part of the former colony of Canada of New France, conquered by Great Britain in the Seven Years' War ending in 1763 (also called the French and Indian War in the United States). Other parts of New France conquered by Britain became the Colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. Northumberland
Northumberland () is a county in Northern England, one of two counties in England which border with Scotland. Legislative Assembly Of Lower Canada
The Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada was the lower house of the bicameral structure of provincial government in Lower Canada until 1838. The legislative assembly was created by the Constitutional Act of 1791. The lower house consisted of elected legislative councilors who created bills to be passed up to the Legislative Council of Lower Canada, whose members were appointed by the governor general. Following the Lower Canada Rebellion, the lower house was dissolved on March 27, 1838, and Lower Canada was administered by an appointed Special Council. With the Act of Union in 1840, a new lower chamber, the Legislative Assembly of Canada, was created for both Upper and Lower Canada which existed until 1867, when the Legislative Assembly of Quebec was created. Cap-Saint-Ignace is a municipality in the Montmagny Regional County Municipality within the Chaudière-Appalaches region of Quebec, Canada. It is located on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River, 70 km east of Quebec City on Route 132. Cap-Saint-Ignace is located on the scenic chemin des Pionniers Ouest, also known as Highway 132, at the Junction of the route du Petit-Cap which is accessible from provincial Autoroute 20, the Autoroute Jean-Lesage. Louis Lagueux
Louis Lagueux (November 20, 1793 – June 15, 1832) was a lawyer and political figure in Lower Canada. He was born in the town of Quebec in 1793, the son of merchant Louis Lagueux and Louise Bégin, whose father Charles Bégin served in the legislative assembly. Lagueux studied at the Petit Séminaire de Québec, articled in law with Joseph-Rémi Vallières de Saint-Réal and qualified to practice in 1817. That same year, he entered the importing business with a partner; after that business failed the following year, he returned to the practice of law. John Cannon (politician)
John Cannon (c. 1783 – February 19, 1833) was a businessman and political figure in Lower Canada. He was born in St. John's in the Newfoundland Colony around 1783, the son of Edward Cannon (1739-181 a master masonry, mason and Helena (Eleanor) Murphy, who had immigrated from Ireland around 1774. In 1795, he moved to the town of Quebec with his family; he apprenticed with his father beginning in 1800 and became a member of a company that included his father and brothers Ambrose and Laurence. John became head of the company as his father retired. After his brothers died, he became a master mason on his own. He served in the local militia. In 1824, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada for Hampshire County; his election was declared invalid in 1826 after it was found that he had supplied alcohol to voters.
