Åland State Provincial Office
The State Provincial Office on the Åland Islands () represented the Finland, Finnish central government on Åland between 1918 and 2009. Due to its Autonomous entity, autonomy, it had somewhat different functions than similar offices in other Provinces of Finland. Generally a State Provincial Office was a joint regional authority of seven different ministries of the Government of Finland. In Åland the State Provincial Office also represented a set of other authorities of the central government, which in mainland Finland, mainland-Finland has separate bureaucracies. On the other hand duties, which on mainland-Finland were handled by the provincial offices, were transferred to the autonomous government of Åland. Provincial Governors Of Finland
The Governor, fi, Maaherra, or sv, Landshövding, of a province of Finland headed the activities of the State Provincial Office, fi, Lääninhallitus, links=no, or sv, Länsstyrelse, links=no until the end of 2009, when the provinces were abolished. The governors were appointed by the President. Many former ministers including but not limited to Kaarlo Hillilä, Martti Miettunen, Hannele Pokka and Anneli Taina served as governors, since the post was regarded as prestigious enough for a retiring minister, but still politically neutral. The title of ''maaherra'' was also considered a personal title, such that once appointed, the title ''maaherra'' remained for life. Peter Lindbäck (born 14 June 1955, Helsinki) is the governor of Åland. He was born in 1955 and studied at the University of Helsinki, from which he graduated in law in 1981. Lindbäck was appointed governor of Åland on 5 March 1999 when his predecessor Henrik Gustafsson retired. Henrik Anders (Henka) Gustafsson (born 14 August 1970 in Sköllersta, Sweden) is an international Motorcycle speedway rider who won the 1993 World Pairs Championship with Tony Rickardsson and the Speedway World Team Cup with Sweden in 1994 and 2000. Early in his career Gustafsson was known as much for his long, curly blonde hair as he was his riding, though his riding soon outshone his locks. Åland ( fi, Ahvenanmaa: ; ; ) is an Federacy, autonomous and Demilitarized zone, demilitarised region of Finland since 1920 by a decision of the League of Nations.
