Árja
Árja ("Commitment" in northern Sami) is a Norwegian Sami political party. The party was founded on 24 May 2008 in Jergul, and its leader is Láilá Susanne Vars. The ideology of the party is claimed to be based on respect for the elderly in society and traditionally based education. Otherwise, the party wants a more open and available Sami Parliament, criticises the Sami Parliament for neglecting traditionally Sami values and society, and thus wants to strengthen the rights for the rural and coastal population. The party put up lists in five out of seven constituencies, and ran for its first Sami parliamentary election in 2009 where it immediately broke through as the third largest party, with 10% of the votes and three parliamentary representatives. 2013 Norwegian Sámi Parliamentary Election
The 2013 Norwegian Sámi parliamentary election was held on 9 September 2013, simultaneously with the 2013 Norwegian parliamentary election. All 39 seats in the Norwegian Sámi parliament, the ''Sámediggi'', were up for election. The election resulted in a hung parliament, with Aili Keskitalo of the Norwegian Sámi Association taking the presidency through a minority coalition. Background Sámi parliament elections are held simultaneously with the Norwegian parliament elections. Voters elect a total of 39 representatives from seven total constituencies. The election was held on 9 September 2013 in communities with over 30 citizens on the electoral roll, communities with under 30 registered require their citizens to vote in advance between 1 July and 6 September 2013. 2009 Norwegian Sámi Parliamentary Election
The 2009 Sámi parliamentary election was held in Norway on September 14, 2009. Voters elected 39 members for the Sámi Parliament of Norway. The election saw significant losses for the two dominant parties in the Sámi Parliament, the Norwegian Labour Party and Norwegian Sámi Association. Two third parties made a breakthrough, the new Árja and the Progress Party (Norway), Progress Party, with three seats each. Negotiations Both the Labour Party and Norwegian Sámi Association had refused to cooperate with the Progress Party, who notably seek the dismantling of the Sámi Parliament. While both Labour and NSR were reluctant to give hold to a so-called "minor party tyranny", the parties also thought it unlikely to establish a Sámi Parliament Council together, but held that it could not be ruled entirely out. Láilá Susanne Vars
Laila Susanne Vars is a Norwegian-Sami human rights lawyer and former politician. Elected rector of Sámi University of Applied Sciences 2019-2023. First Sámi woman to achieve a PhD in Law. She is former research director at the Norwegian National Human Rights Institution (NHRI). Expert member of the United Nations' Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP) 2017-2023. She led the Sami Árja party from 2008 to 2010, and was vice president of the Sami Parliament of Norway from 2009 to 2013. In 2013, she became the director of the Gáldu Resource Centre for the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which was based in Kautokeino, Norway. When Gáldu was integrated into the NHRI in 2017, Vars worked AS research director at the NHRI. The 2017 Norwegian Sámi parliamentary election was held on 11 September 2017. All 39 seats in the Norwegian Sámi legislature, the Sámediggi, were up for election. Background Previous election In the previous election, held on 9 September 2013, the Norwegian Sámi Association, with former President of the Sámi Parliament Aili Keskitalo as their Presidential candidate, won a plurality, with 11 of the 39 seats, including 2 on a joint list with the Sami People's Party. Fred Buljo
Fred-René Øvergård Buljo (born 6 February 1988), better known as simply Fred Buljo, is a Norwegian Sámi rapper and joiker. Buljo is a member of the Sámi rap duo Duolva Duottar, consisting of Buljo and Ole Mahtte Gaup, established in 2007. In 2008 the group made a breakthrough when they participated in '' Norske Talenter'' and reached the final. He also is one of members of the Norwegian supergroup KEiiNO, alongside Alexandra Rotan and Tom Hugo, the group was created in late 2018 in preparation for the participation in Melodi Grand Prix 2019., they won the contest and so were selected to represent Norway in the 2019 Eurovision Contest, coming in 7th in the semifinals, and 6th in the final, with the song " Spirit in the Sky". Indigenous rights are those rights that exist in recognition of the specific condition of the Indigenous peoples.
