Álvaro Vieira Pinto
Álvaro Borges Vieira Pinto (11 November 1909 in Campos dos Goytacazes – 11 June 1987 in Rio de Janeiro) was a Brazilian intellectual, philosopher and translator. He is well known for his nationalism and his defense of the autonomous development of Brazil. His research addressed education, medicine, mathematics, demography, physics, technology and others. The educator Paulo Freire called him ''mestre brasileiro'', 'the Brazilian teacher'. His philosophy centered on the concept of 'work', which he understood to be an essential aspect of the human being. Campos Dos Goytacazes
Campos dos Goytacazes () is a municipality located in the northern region of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, with a population of 471,737 inhabitants. Location Campos dos Goytacazes has an area of 4,032 km2 (1,557 sq mi), which makes it the largest municipality in the state by area, and its elevation is 14 m. Its name comes from the geographical characteristic of the region, very flat with fields (''campos'' in Portuguese) and from the Goytacazes Indians, which inhabited the region. Campos, as the city is usually known, is a macro region of the Northern Fluminense, and is a micro region of Campos dos Goytacazes. The city has a tropical climate. Paulo Reglus Neves Freire (19 September 1921 – 2 May 1997) was a Brazilian educator and philosopher who was a leading advocate of critical pedagogy. His influential work ''Pedagogy of the Oppressed'' is generally considered one of the foundational texts of the critical pedagogy movement, and was the third most cited book in the social sciences according to Google Scholar. Biography Freire was born on 19 September 1921 to a middle-class family in Recife, the capital of the northeastern Brazilian state of Pernambuco. He became familiar with poverty and hunger from an early age as a result of the Great Depression. In 1931 his family moved to the more affordable city of Jaboatão dos Guararapes, 18 km west of Recife. His father died on 31 October 1934.
