The mukhtar (Arabic: مختار, romanized: mukhtār, lit. 'chosen one'; Turkish: muhtar; Greek: μουχτάρης) was a civilian administrator, a type of lesser mayor, in villages and neighbourhoods in the Ottoman Empire.
