Interregnum (2005–2009)
Star Trek: The Beginning was a proposal for an Earth-Romulan War trilogy drawing inspiration from the Iliad, the Odyssey and the Serbo-Croatian War. Years later, critic Glen Oliver described Erik Jendresen's hastily-completed draft script as "a very, very different brand of Star Trek which smartly, even brazenly, upholds the mythology’s core values". Separately, Geoffrey Thorne wrote a treatment for Star Trek: Federation, a post-utopian series dealing with the ramifications of an era of peace and technical stagnation. He envisioned it as appealing to a mass audience: more "rough and tumble" and less pontification. Star Trek: Final Frontier was a short-form animated web series for startrek.com, but it was imperilled during preproduction by the Paramount–CBS breakup in 2006: Paramount Home Entertainment was interested in pursuing it, but CBS Television held the rights, and ultimately it was cancelled in December 2007. It was conceived as appealing to children and existing fans alike, and was set after a calamity in which warp travel was made useless. J. Michael Straczynski and Bryce Zabel also developed a reboot-the-universe plan in 2004, but never pitched it to the studio.
