Beginning of the Sengoku period

Historians do not agree on a single event that marks the beginning of the Sengoku period. The traditional starting date is the outbreak of the Ōnin War in 1467, because the conflict severely weakened the political order centered on the Ashikaga shogunate in Kyoto. Other interpretations begin with the Kyōtoku incident in 1454, which initiated decades of warfare in the Kantō region, or the Meiō incident in 1493, after which powerful military families repeatedly deposed, installed, and competed for control of Ashikaga shōguns.
