Taxonomy and phylogeny
Traditionally, butterflies were divided into the superfamilies Papilionoidea, Hesperioidea and the moth-like Hedyloidea. Recent work has discovered that Hesperiidae and Hedylidae, the only families within "Hesperioidea" and "Hedyloidea", are nested within the Papilionoidea, meaning that Papilionoidea would be synonymous with Rhopalocera. The relationships between the 7 families are extremely well resolved, which is summarised in the below cladogram.
