Geologic
Neutrinos are produced together with the natural background radiation. In particular, the decay chains of
U and
Th isotopes, as well as
K, include beta decays which emit antineutrinos. These so-called geoneutrinos can provide valuable information on the Earth's interior. A first indication for geoneutrinos was found by the KamLAND experiment in 2005, updated results have been presented by KamLAND, and Borexino. The main background in the geoneutrino measurements are the antineutrinos coming from reactors.
