Middle Danube
In 549 the Langobards and Gepids almost started a war, but they first went to Justinian, each arguing that their opponents were worse allies to Rome. The Langobards accused the Gepids of enslaving Romans, and of boasting that they controlled Roman Dacia. Justinian decided to take the Langobard side, while the Heruli joined the Gepids, despite another Heruli force having previously been recruited into the Roman military. After a Roman force moved to help the Langobards, and engaged with the pro-Gepid Heruli, the Gepids quickly made peace with the Langobards.
