L-arginine

Extracted from the Wikipedia article Arginine.
Precursor of nitric oxide
L-Arginine is the sole precursor of nitric oxide in humans and many other animals (NO), one of the smallest messenger substances in the human body. Through the action of NO synthases (nitric oxide synthases), L-arginine is converted into the endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF), which has been identified as NO. Physiologically, EDRF induces vasodilation by diffusing NO into the vascular smooth muscle layer. There, it activates soluble guanylate cyclase, leading to relaxation of the smooth muscle and a reduction in vascular tone. Studies show that arginine can significantly reduce elevated blood pressure through this vasodilatory effect.
