Application
fNIRS has been successfully implemented as a control signal for brain–computer interface systems. Modern fNIRS systems are combined with virtual or augmented reality in studies on brain-computer interfaces, neurorehabilitation or social perception. fNIRS can be used to monitor musicians' brain activity while playing musical instruments. fNIRS is compatible with some other neuroimaging modalities, including: MRI, EEG, and MEG. fNIRS has also been used to measure the effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).
