Diatoxanthin is a type of xanthophyll found in phytoplankton and diatoms. It plays a vital role in photoprotection in diatoms, where the diadinoxanthin-diatoxanthin cycle is an important short-term photoprotective mechanism. Diatoxanthin has also been investigated for uses in treating breast cancer.
