Topic summary
CCL5

Chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 5 (also CCL5) is a protein which in humans is encoded by the CCL5gene. The gene was discovered in 1990 by in situ hybridisation, and it is localised on the 17q11.2-q12 chromosome.
It is also known as RANTES (regulated on activation, normal T-cellexpressed and secreted). RANTES was first described by Tom Schall, who named the protein; it originated from the Argentine film Man Facing Southeast about an alien named Rantés, and the acronym was created to fit the name.
