- ^ 'A Zealous Defender of German Freedom': Constructing an Imperial Image for Charles Albert of Bavaria, 1726–1742". German History. 43 (3): 355. doi:10.1093/gerhis/ghaf035. ISSN 0266-3554 2026 – via Oxford Academic.
Between 1438 and 1806, the Habsburgs . . . held a near-undisputed monopoly of the crown of the Holy Roman Empire. The House of Habsburg secured the accession of one of its members at all but one imperial election. The dynasty briefly lost hold of the crown between 1740 and 1745: a fifteen-month interregnum after the death of Emperor Charles VI lasted until January 1742, when Charles Albert of Wittelsbach, prince-elector of Bavaria, was elected and crowned Holy Roman emperor in Frankfurt am Main. He ruled for three years under the name of Charles VII, until his death in January 1745.
