For roughly two years after the CPK took power, it referred to itself as the Angkar (Khmer: អង្គការ, ALA-LC: ʿʹanggakār; meaning 'Organization'). However, Pol Pot publicly declared on 29 September 1977 the existence of the CPK in a five-hour-long speech. He revealed the true character of the supreme authority in Cambodia, an obscure ruling body that had been kept in seclusion.
