Netherlands

In the Netherlands, anaesthesiologists must complete medical school training, which takes six years. After successfully completing medical school training, they start a five-year residency training in anaesthesiology. The final two years of residency (the fourth and fifth years) are devoted to a differentiation track in either perioperative medicine, intensive care medicine, or pain and palliative medicine. Residents who choose the perioperative medicine track further specialize in an area such as general anaesthesiology, paediatric anaesthesiology, obstetric anaesthesiology, emergency medicine, or research.
