Etymology and usage

In the United States and Canada, the term "airplane" is used for powered fixed-wing aircraft. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, and most of the Commonwealth, the term "aeroplane" () is usually applied to these aircraft. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, "Airplane became the standard U.S. term (replacing aeroplane) after it was adopted by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics in 1916."
