Streptogramins are a class of antibiotics. They work as protein synthesis inhibitors. Streptogramins are effective in the treatment of vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE), two of the most rapidly growing strains of multidrug-resistant bacteria. They fall into two groups: streptogramin A (23-membered macrolide) and streptogramin B (depsipeptide). The two groups act synergistically.

Streptogramin AStreptogramin AStreptogramin A is a group of antibiotics within the larger family of antibiotics known as streptogramins. They are synthesized by the bacteria Streptomyces virginiae. The streptogramin family of antibiotics consists of two distinct groups: group A antibiotics contain a 23-membered unsaturated ring with lactone and peptide bonds while group B antibiotics are depsipeptides (lactone-cyclized peptides).Vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureusMacrolideMacrolideMacrolides are a class of mostly natural products with a large macrocycliclactone ring to which one or more deoxy sugars, usually cladinose and desosamine, may be attached. Macrolides belong to the polyketide class of natural products. Some macrolides have antibiotic or antifungal activity and are used as pharmaceutical drugs.Vancomycin-resistant EnterococcusVancomycin-resistant EnterococcusVancomycin-resistant Enterococcus, or vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), are bacterial strains of the genus Enterococcus that are resistant to the antibioticvancomycin.DepsipeptideDepsipeptideA depsipeptide is a peptide in which one or more amide, -C(O)NHR-, linkages are replaced by the corresponding ester, -C(O)OR-. Depsipeptides usually contain alternating amide and ester linkages. Elimination of an amide linkage in a peptide structure results in a decrease of H-bonding capability, which is responsible for secondary structure within peptides, thus inducing structural warping and diversity.Multidrug-resistant bacteriaMultidrug-resistant bacteriaMultidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria are bacteria that are resistant to three or more classes of antimicrobial drugs, making them hard to treat. MDR bacteria have seen an increase in prevalence in recent years and pose serious risks to public health. Previously, MDR bacteria were primarily associated with hospital-acquired infections, but have increasingly become a major cause of community-acquired infections.Streptogramin B
