In linguistics, reappropriation, reclamation, or resignification is the cultural process by which a group reclaims words or artifacts that were previously used in a way disparaging of that group. It is a specific form of a semantic change (i.e., change in a word's meaning). Linguistic reclamation can have wider implications in the fields of discourse and has been described in terms of personal or sociopolitical empowerment.

NiggerNiggerRacial slur against Black peopleNigger is a racial slur directed at Black people. References to nigger have been increasingly replaced by the euphemism"the N-word", notably in cases where nigger is mentioned but not directly used. In an instance of linguistic reappropriation, the term nigger is also used casually and fraternally among African Americans, most commonly in the form of nigga, whose spelling reflects the phonology of African-American English.PejorativePejorativeA pejorative word, phrase, slur, or derogatory term is a word or grammatical form expressing a negative or disrespectful connotation, a low opinion, or a lack of respect toward someone or something. It is also used to express criticism, hostility, or disregard. Sometimes, a term is regarded as pejorative in some social or ethnic groups but not in others or may be originally pejorative but later adopt a non-pejorative sense (or vice versa) in some or all contexts.Theoretical linguisticsTheoretical linguisticsBranch of linguistics which inquires into the nature of language Theoretical linguistics, or general linguistics, is the branch of linguistics which inquires into the nature of language itself and seeks to answer fundamental questions as to what language is; how it works; how universal grammar (UG) as a domain-specific mental organ operates, if it exists at all; what its unique properties are; how language relates to other cognitive processes, etc. Theoretical linguists are most concerned with constructing models of linguistic knowledge and ultimately developing a linguistic theory.Semantic changeSemantic change (also semantic shift, semantic progression, semantic development, or semantic drift) is a form of language change regarding the evolution of word usage—usually to the point that the modern meaning is radically different from the original usage. In diachronic (or historical) linguistics, semantic change is a change in one of the meanings of a word.QueerQueerTerm for sexual and gender minorities Part of a series onLGBTQ people LGBTQLesbianGayBisexualTransgenderQueer Sexual orientation and gender Agender Aromantic Asexual Gray asexual Aegosexual Demisexual Biology Bisexual Polysexual Pansexual Demographics Environment Fictosexual Gender expression Gender fluid Gender identity Gender role Gender nonconforming Homosexual Intersex Non-heterosexual Non-binary Queer Questioning Sexual identity Romantic orientation Sex–gender distinction Transgender Trans man Trans woman Transsexual Two-spirit WSW History General Timeline Same-sex marriage Intersex Movements Gay liberation Same-sex unions Stonewall riots Identities Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Culture Business Coming out Community African-American Disability and LGBTQ people Drag culture in New York City Dyke March Events Awareness periods Largest events Gay village Homophile movement Media Bury your gays Films New queer cinema Periodicals LGBTQ culture in New York City Pride Pride Month Parade Queer art QPR and QPP Same-sex relationship Cross-sex relationship Slang Polari Socialization Subcultures Symbols Flags Takatāpui Transgender culture of New York City Moe aikāne Tourism Wigstock Rights Adoption Civil union Decriminalization Gender self-identification Intersex Legal recognition of intersex people Legal recognition of non-binary gender Marriage Military service Parenting Rights by country or territory Trans rights Yogyakarta Principles Health Association of LGBTQ Psychiatrists MSM and Blood donation restrictions / HIV LGBTQ medical organizations Reproduction Mental health National LGBT Cancer Network Transgender health care Gender-affirming hormone therapy Gender-affirming surgery Gender transition Legal status of gender-affirming healthcare Misinformation Suicide Societal attitudes Media portrayal Religion & LGBTQ homosexuality transgender Sexual diversity Stereotypes Societal attitudes toward homosexuality Discrimination Acephobia Arophobia AIDS stigma Anti-LGBTQ rhetoric Biphobia Bullying Censorship Closeted Outing Criminalization Domestic violence Erasure Straightwashing Bisexual Lesbian Trans Compulsory heterosexuality Gay bashing Gayphobia Heteropatriarchy Heterosexism Homophobia liberal Intersex discrimination Legality of conversion therapy Lesbophobia Opposition to LGBTQ rights UK anti-trans movement 2020s US anti-LGBTQ Trump-era persecution of trans people Grooming conspiracy theory Suicide Youth vulnerability Migration Mixed-orientation marriage Normativity allo- amato- cis- hetero- Racism Sexualism Transphobia Non-binary people Transgender inequality Trans men Trans women Violence in Belize in UK in US List Trans people Academic fields and discourse Communism & LGBTQ rights Gender studies Lesbian feminism Lavender linguistics LGBTQ conservatism In the US Neuroqueer theory Queer anarchism Queer studies Queer theory Social construction of gender Socialism & LGBTQ rights Transfeminism Transgender studies Travesti See also Autism and LGBTQ people Discrimination against LGBTQ people Gay-friendly GLAAD LGBTQ-affirming religious groups LGBTQ ageing LGBTQ retirement issues in the United States LGBTQ sex education Straight ally LGBTQ portalvte Sexual orientation Sexual orientations Asexual Bisexual Heterosexual Homosexual Gay men Lesbian Related terms Allosexual Androphilia & Gynephilia Bi-curious Cybersexuality Fictosexual Gray asexual Aegosexual Demisexual Monosexual Non-heterosexual Omnisexual Polysexual Pansexual Plurisexual Queer Sapphism Research Biological Birth order Epigenetic Handedness Neuroscientific Prenatal hormones Demographics Environment Female Male Kinsey scale Klein Grid Queer studies Sexology Timeline Transgender sexuality Non-human animals Animal sexual behavior Non-reproductive Homosexual List Related topics Aromanticism Criminalization Homoaffectivity Rights by country Men who have sex with men Questioning Rights Romantic orientation Sexual fluidity Situational Split attraction model Women who have sex with women Categoryvte Queer is an umbrella term for sexual and gender minorities.Black peopleBlack peopleRacial classification of peopleBlack is a racial classification of people, a skin color-based category for specific populations with a mid- to dark brown complexion. In some formulations, it is a component of self-concept.NiggaNigga ( ), also known as "the N-word", is a colloquial term in African-American Vernacular English that is considered vulgar in most contexts of its use. It began as a dialect form of the word nigger, an ethnic slur against black people. As a result of reappropriation, today the word is used mostly by African-Americans in a largely non-pejorative sense as a slang term referring to another person or to themselves, often in a neutral or friendly way.Self-controlSelf-controlSelf-control is the ability to regulate one's emotions, thoughts, and behavior in the face of temptations and impulses.
