Overtaking or passing is the act of one vehicle going past another slower moving vehicle, travelling in the same direction, on a road. The lane used for overtaking another vehicle is often a passing lane farther from the road shoulder, which is to the left in places that drive on the right and to the right in places that drive on the left.

Single carriagewaySingle carriagewayA single carriageway (British English) is a road with one, two or more lanes arranged within a one carriageway with no central reservation/median strip to separate opposing flows of traffic. A single-track road is a type of single carriageway with a single lane with passing places for traffic in both directions. An undivided highway (American English) is the term used for motorways with two or more lanes with no central reservation/median strip.TrafficTrafficMovement of vehicles and pedestrians along land routes Crossing from Fort Lee, Bergen County, New Jersey, into Manhattan, New York in heavy automobile traffic on the George Washington Bridge, the world's busiest motor vehicle bridge, transporting approximately 300,000 cars and trucks daily across the Hudson River. Traffic is the movement of vehicles and pedestrians along land routes.Passing lanePassing laneA passing lane (North American English), overtaking lane (English outside North America) is a lane on a multi-lane highway or motorway closest to the median of the road (the central reservation) used for passing vehicles in other lanes. (North American usage also calls the higher-speed lane nearest the median the "inside lane" but in the United Kingdom this is the "outside lane".)GermanyGermanyCountry in EuropeGermany, officially the Federal Republic of Germany, is a country in Western and Central Europe. They are fundamental to traffic flow, and are sometimes called a "rule of the road". The terms right- and left-hand "drive" refer to the position of the driver and the steering wheel in the vehicle and are, in automobiles, the reverse of the terms right- and left-hand "traffic".Republic of IrelandRepublic of IrelandCountry in Northwestern EuropeIreland (Irish: Éire), also known as the Republic of Ireland (Poblacht na hÉireann), is a country in Northwestern Europe. It consists of 26 of the 32 counties of the island of Ireland, with a population of about 5.4 million. Its capital and largest city is Dublin, on the eastern side of the island, with a population of over 1.5 million. National primary roads form the major routes between the major urban centres. There are 2649 km of national primary roads. This category of road has the prefix "N" followed by one or two digits. Most public roads (highways) have at least two lanes, one for traffic in each direction, generally separated by lane markings. On multilane roadways and busier two-lane roads, lanes are generally designated with road surface markings. Major highways often have two multi-lane roadways separated by a median.RoadRoadA road is a thoroughfare from one place to another, primarily used for movement of traffic. Many roads are paved. The words "road" and "street" are commonly considered to be interchangeable, but the distinction is important in urban design. Roads differ from streets, whose primary use is local access. Roads also differ from stroads, which combine the features of streets and roads.Shoulder (road)Shoulder (road)A shoulder (American English), hard shoulder (British English) or breakdown lane (Australian English) is an emergency stopping lane by the verge on the outer side of a road or motorway. Many wider freeways, or expressways elsewhere have shoulders on both sides of each directional carriageway—in the median, as well as at the outer edges of the road, for additional safety. Shoulders are not intended for use by through traffic, although there are exceptions.Controlled-access highwayControlled-access highwayHighway designed for high-speed, regulated traffic flowThe cloverleaf interchange between US 131, M-6 and 68th Street in Cutlerville, Michigan, United States, shows many of the features of controlled-access highways: entry and exit ramps, median strips for opposing traffic, no at-grade intersections and no direct access to properties. This sign, or some variation thereof, is used to denote controlled-access highways in many countries.Typical overhead signage on Ontario's King's Highway network featuring an airport pictogram, distances to upcoming interchanges, and lane guidance.manoeuvremanoeuvreRelated word or term.Special:Search/overtakingSpecial:Search/overtakingRelated word or term.
