Monel is a group of alloys of nickel (from 52 to 68%) and copper, with small amounts of iron, manganese, carbon, and silicon. Monel is not a cupronickel alloy because it has less than 60% copper. Stronger than pure nickel, Monel alloys are resistant to corrosion by many aggressive agents, including rapidly flowing seawater. They can be fabricated readily by hot- and cold-working, machining, and welding.

CupronickelCupronickelCupronickel or copper–nickel (CuNi) is an alloy of copper with nickel, usually along with small quantities of other metals added for strength, such as iron and manganese. The copper content typically varies from 60 to 90 percent. (Monel is a nickel–copper alloy that contains a minimum of 52 percent nickel.) Despite its high copper content, cupronickel is silver in colour.SuperalloySuperalloyA superalloy, sometimes called a heat-resistant superalloy (HRSA) or a high-performance alloy, is an alloy with the ability to operate at a high fraction of its melting point. Key characteristics of a superalloy include mechanical strength, thermal creep deformation resistance, surface stability, and corrosion and oxidation resistance. The crystal structure is typically face-centered cubic (FCC) austenitic.Work hardeningWork hardeningWork hardening, also known as strain hardening, is the process by which a material's load-bearing capacity (strength) increases during plastic (permanent) deformation. This characteristic is what sets ductile materials apart from brittle materials. Work hardening may be desirable, undesirable, or inconsequential, depending on the application. This strengthening occurs because of dislocation movements and dislocation generation within the crystal structure of the material.NickelNickelNickel is a chemical element; it has symbol Ni and atomic number 28. It is a silvery-white lustrous metal with a slight golden tinge. Nickel is a hard and ductile transition metal. Pure nickel is chemically reactive, but large pieces are slow to react with air under standard conditions because a passivation layer of nickel oxide that prevents further corrosion forms on the surface.AlloyAlloyAn alloy is a mixture of chemical elements of which in most cases at least one is a metallic element, although the word is also sometimes used for mixtures of elements; herein only metallic alloys are described. Metallic alloys often have properties that differ from those of the pure elements from which they are made.Special Metals CorporationSpecial Metals CorporationSpecial Metals Corporation (SMC) is an American supplier of special refractory alloys and is headquartered in New Hartford, New York, United States. The company has operations in Perth, Western Australia; Albury, New South Wales; Huntington, West Virginia; Dunkirk, New York; Burnaugh, Kentucky; Elkhart, Indiana and Hereford, England. SMC's trademarks include Inconel, Incoloy, Monel, Nimonic, and Udimet.Ambrose MonellAmbrose MonellAmbrose Monell (1873 – May 2, 1921) was an American industrialist and military commander. He served as the first president of the International Nickel Company and was the namesake of the alloy known as Monel. BiographyMonell was born in 1873 to New York City Civil Court Justice Ambrose Monell. He was the grandson of New York Surrogate's Court Chief Justice Claudius L. He was chairman and president of International Nickel Company and discovered the alloy Monel. BiographyStanley was born on August 1, 1876, in Little Falls, New Jersey.SeawaterSeawaterSeawater, or sea water, is water from a sea or ocean. On average, seawater in the world's oceans has a salinity of about 3.5% (35 g/L, 35 ppt, 600 mM). This means that every kilogram (roughly one liter by volume) of seawater has approximately 35 grams (1.2 oz) of dissolved salts (predominantly sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl−) ions).CopperCopperChemical element with atomic number 29 (Cu)–↑Cu↓Agnickel ← copper → zincTrademarkTrademarkTrade identifier of products or services A trademark (also written trade mark or trade-mark) is a type of intellectual property that consists of a word, phrase, symbol, design, or combination thereof that identifies a product or service from a particular source and distinguishes it from others.Vale CanadaVale CanadaVale Canada Limited, doing business as Vale Base Metals, is a majority owned subsidiary of the Brazilian mining company Vale with Manara Minerals holding a 10 per cent minority share. The company was created from the former Inco, which Vale acquired in 2007. Vale's nickel mining and metals division is headquartered in London with a corporate center in Toronto. It produces nickel, copper, cobalt, and other Platinum Group Metals.
