Macaws are a group of large New World parrots that are long-tailed and often colorful, in the tribeArini. They are popular in aviculture or as companion parrots, although there are conservation concerns about several species in the wild. BiologyOf the many different Psittacidae (true parrots) genera, six are classified as macaws: Ara, Anodorhynchus, Cyanopsitta, Primolius, Orthopsittaca, and Diopsittaca.

Red-shouldered macawRed-shouldered macawThe red-shouldered macaw (Diopsittaca nobilis) is a small green South American parrot, a member of a large group of Neotropical parrots called macaws. The species is named for the red coverts on its wings. It is the smallest macaw, being 30 cm (12 in) in length – similar in size to the Aratinga parakeets. It is native to the tropical lowlands, savannahs, and swamplands of Brazil, the Guianas, Bolivia, Venezuela, and far south-eastern Peru.Hyacinth macawHyacinth macawThe hyacinth macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus), or hyacinthine macaw, is a parrot native to central and eastern South America. With a length (from the top of its head to the tip of its long pointed tail) of about one meter it is longer than any other species of parrot. It is the largest macaw and the largest flying parrot species. While generally easily recognized, it could be confused with the smaller Lear's macaw.Red-and-green macawRed-and-green macawThe red-and-green macaw (Ara chloropterus), also known as the green-winged macaw, is a large, mostly-red macaw of the genusAra. It is popular in aviculture, and is the second most commonly kept macaw species after the blue-and-yellow macaw. However, they are not as common in captivity as the blue-and-yellow, and are much more expensive; prices are often double that of the blue-and-gold.Glaucous macawGlaucous macawThe glaucous macaw (Anodorhynchus glaucus) is a critically endangered or possibly extinct species of large, blue and grey South American parrot, a member of a large group of neotropical parrots known as macaws. This macaw is closely related to Lear's macaw (A. leari) and the hyacinth macaw (A. hyacinthinus). In Guarani, it is called gua'a hovy after its vocalizations. DescriptionThe glaucous macaw is 70 cm (28 in) long.Scarlet macawScarlet macawThe scarlet macaw (Ara macao) also called the red-and-yellow macaw, red-and-blue macaw or red-breasted macaw, is a large yellow, green, red and blue Neotropicalparrot native to humid evergreen forests of the Americas.Great green macawGreat green macawThe great green macaw (Ara ambiguus), also known as Buffon's macaw or the great military macaw, is a critically endangered Central and South America parrot found in Nicaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Ecuador. Two allopatric subspecies are recognized; the nominate subspecies, Ara ambiguus ssp. ambiguus, occurs from Honduras to Colombia, while Ara ambiguus ssp.AnodorhynchusAnodorhynchusAnodorhynchus is a genus of large blue macaws from open and semi-open habitats in central and eastern South America. It includes two extant species, the hyacinth macaw and Lear's macaw also known as the indigo macaw, and one probably extinct species, the glaucous macaw. At about 100 centimetres (39 in) in length the hyacinth macaw is the longest parrot in the world. Glaucous and Lear's macaws are exclusively cliff nesters; hyacinth macaws are mostly tree nesters.Red-bellied macawRed-bellied macawThe red-bellied macaw (Orthopsittaca manilatus), also known as Guacamaya manilata, is a medium-sized, mostly green parrot, a member of a group of large Neotropical parrots known as macaws. It is the largest of what are commonly called "mini-macaws". The belly has a large maroon patch which gives the species its name.Blue-and-yellow macawBlue-and-yellow macawThe blue-and-yellow macaw (Ara ararauna), also known as the blue-and-gold macaw, is a large Neotropicalparrot with a mostly blue dorsum, light yellow/orange venter, and gradient hues of green on top of its head. It is a member of the large group of neotropical parrots known as macaws.Neotropical parrotNeotropical parrotThe neotropical parrots or New Worldparrots comprise about 150 species in 32 genera found throughout South and Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean islands and the southern United States. Among them are some of the most familiar, iconic, and beautiful parrots, including the blue and gold macaw, sun conure, and yellow-headed amazon. The parrots of the New World have been known to Europeans since Columbus remarked upon them in his journal in 1492.Companion parrotCompanion parrotA companion parrot is a parrot kept as a pet that interacts abundantly with its human keeper. Parrots are among the most popular companion birds worldwide, but most species are not domesticated and retain the complex behavioural and environmental needs of wild parrots, including flocking, social interaction, varied foraging and regular flight.Arini (tribe)Arini (tribe)The Arinitribe of the neotropical parrots is a monophyleticclade of macaws and parakeets (commonly called conures in aviculture) characterized by colorful plumage and long, tapering tails. They occur throughout Mexico, Central America, and South America, the Caribbean and the southern United States. One genus and several species are extinct; another genus is extinct in the wild. Two species are known only through subfossil remains.AvicultureAvicultureAviculture is the practice of keeping and breeding birds, especially of wild birds in captivity, and including poultry, in controlled conditions, normally within the confines of a cage or an aviary.
