Larnite is a calciumsilicate mineral with the formula Ca2SiO4. It is the calcium member of the olivine group of minerals. It was first described from an occurrence at Scawt Hill, Larne, Northern Ireland in 1929 by Cecil Edgar Tilley and named for the location. At the type locality, it occurs with wollastonite, spurrite, perovskite, , melilite and gehlenite. It occurs in contact metamorphosedlimestones and chalks adjacent to basaltic intrusives.

Cecil Edgar TilleyCecil Edgar TilleyCecil Edgar TilleyFRS, Hon FRSE, PGS (14 May 1894 – 24 January 1973) was an Australian-British petrologist and geologist. LifeTilley was born in Unley, Adelaide, the youngest child of John Thomas Edward Tilley, a civil engineer from London, and his wife South Australia-born wife, Catherine Jane Nicholas.Scawt HillScawt HillScawt Hill is a volcanic plug in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, in the borough of Larne, 5 km from the village of Ballygally. It gets its name from the Ulster Scots "scawd" meaning scaly, scabby or rugged. Alternatively, 'scawt' meaning scruffy and contemptible, and when applied to rocks, covered in barnacles. Discovery of mineralsScawt Hill is notable for being the type locality for several hydratedcalcium silicates, that is, the place where they were first identified.Silicate mineralSilicate mineralSilicate minerals are rock-forming minerals made up of silicate groups. They are the largest and most important class of minerals and make up approximately 90 percent of Earth's crust. In mineralogy, the crystalline forms of silica (SiO2) are usually considered to be tectosilicates, and they are classified as such in the Dana classification system (75.1). However, the Nickel–Strunz classification categorizes them as oxide minerals (4.DA).LarneLarneLarne (from IrishLatharna, pronounced, the name of a Gaelic territory) is a town on the east coast of County Antrim, Northern Ireland, with a population of 18,853 at the 2021 census. It is a major passenger and freight roll-on roll-off port. Larne is within the Mid and East Antrim Borough Council area.SpurriteSpurriteSpurrite is a white, yellow or light blue mineral with monoclinic crystals. Its chemical formula is Ca5(SiO4)2CO3. Spurrite is generally formed in contact metamorphism zones as mafic magmas are intruded into carbonate rocks. Spurrite's space group is P 2/a. It is biaxial with a birefringence of 0.0390–0.0400, giving second order red interference colors when viewed under crossed polarizers in a petrographic microscope.WollastoniteWollastoniteWollastonite is a calcium inosilicate mineral (CaSiO3) that may contain small amounts of iron, magnesium, and manganese substituting for calcium. It is usually white. It forms when impure limestone or dolomite is subjected to high temperature and pressure, which sometimes occurs in the presence of silica-bearing fluids as in skarns or in contact with metamorphic rocks.PerovskitePerovskitePerovskite (pronunciation: ) is an orthorhombic calcium titanium oxide mineral composed of calcium titanate (chemical formula CaTiO3).OlivineOlivineThe mineralolivine () is a magnesium iron silicate with the chemical formula (Mg,Fe)2SiO4. It is a type of nesosilicate or orthosilicate. The primary component of the Earth's upper mantle, it is a common mineral in Earth's subsurface, but weathers quickly on the surface. Olivine has many uses, such as the gemstoneperidot (or chrysolite), as well as industrial applications like metalworking processes.Northern IrelandNorthern IrelandNorthern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom in the north-east of the island of Ireland. It has been variously described as a country, province or region. Northern Ireland shares an open border to the south and west with the Republic of Ireland. At the 2021 census, its population was 1,903,175, making up around 3% of the UK's population and 27% of the population on the island of Ireland.MeliliteMeliliteMelilite refers to a mineral of the . Minerals of the group are solid solutions of several endmembers, the most important of which are gehlenite and åkermanite. A generalized formula for common melilite is (Ca,Na)2(Al,Mg,Fe)[(Al,Si)SiO7]. Discovered in 1793 near Rome, it has a yellowish, greenish-brown color.Type locality (geology)A type locality, type section in geology is the specific geographic where a particular rock type, stratigraphic unit, unstratified rock unit, mineral species, stratigraphic boundary, or other geological feature was originally defined and named. The type area is the geographic area or region that surrounds the type locality (stratotype, if defined) of a stratigraphic unit or stratigraphic boundary. The concept is similar to type site in archaeology.CalciumCalciumChemical element with atomic number 20 (Ca)Mg↑Ca↓Srpotassium ← calcium → scandium
