Rieden is first mentioned in 1045 as ''Rieta''.


Geography

Rieden had an area, , of . Of this area, 39.8% is used for agricultural purposes, while 56.4% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 3% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (0.7%) is non-productive (rivers or lakes). The former municipality is located in the See-Gaster ''Wahlkreis'' on a terrace above and east of the
