''Land of Oz, Oz'' is made up of four divisions that surround the ''Emerald City'' in the center. The country as a whole was originally enchanted by a character named Queen Lurline, who is described in the Oz backstory. Cowardice is a trait wherein excessive fear prevents an individual from taking a risk or facing danger. It is the opposite of courage. As a label, "cowardice" indicates a failure of character in the face of a challenge. One who succumbs to cowardice is known as a coward. As the opposite of bravery, which many historical and current human societies reward, cowardice is seen as a character flaw that is detrimental to society and thus the failure to face one's fear is often stigmatized and/or punished. March Laumer
March Laumer (17 August 1923 – 12 January 2000) was an American author, primarily of books on the Land of Oz.Paul S. Ritz, "Remembering March Laumer," ''The Baum Bugle'', Vol. 44 No. 1 (Spring 2000), p. 11. March Laumer was born in Birmingham, Alabama, the son of an officer in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was the older brother of science fiction writer Keith Laumer; their youngest brother Frank was also a writer, on historical subjects. March Laumer graduated from the University of Missouri, and taught abroad, including in Ying Wa College (1965–67) in Hong Kong and Turkey. Much of his maturity was spent between residences in Florida and Lund, Sweden. The Scarecrow Of Oz
''The Scarecrow of Oz'' is the ninth book set in the Land of Oz written by L. Frank Baum. Published on July 16, 1915, it was Baum's personal favorite of the Oz books and tells of Cap'n Bill and Trot journeying to Oz and, with the help of the Scarecrow (Oz), Scarecrow, overthrowing the cruel King Krewl of Jinxland. Cap'n Bill and Trot (Mayre Griffiths) had previously appeared in two other novels by Baum, ''The Sea Fairies'' and ''Sky Island''. Plot summary Cap'n Bill, a sailor with a wooden peg-leg, and his friend, a little girl named Trot, set out from California on a calm day for a short ride in their row-boat. A freak whirlpool capsizes their boat and pulls them under water, where they are carried by mermaids (referred to but not seen) to a cave. They are soon joined by a flying creature called an Ork. A nickname is a substitute for the proper name of a familiar person, place or thing. Sky islands are topographic isolation, isolated mountains surrounded by radically different lowland environments. Tik-Tok is a fictional character from the Oz books by American author L. Frank Baum. He has been termed "the prototype robot," and is widely considered to be one of the first robots (preceded by Edward S. Ellis' Huge Hunter, or ''The Steam Man of the Prairies'', in 1868) to appear in modern literature, though the term "Robot" was not used until the 1920s, in the play ''R.U.R.'' Baum's character Tik-Tok (sometimes spelled Tiktok) is a round-bodied mechanical man made of copper, that runs on clockwork springs which periodically need to be wound, like a wind-up toy or a mechanical clock. Billina is a fictional character in the classic children's series of Oz books by American author L. Frank Baum. She is introduced in ''Ozma of Oz'' (1907). Jack Snow, ''Who's Who in Oz'', Chicago, Reilly & Lee, 1954; New York, Peter Bedrick Books, 1988; p. 17. History In ''Ozma of Oz'', Billina becomes Dorothy Gale's animal companion after she and the girl are on a small ship and are thrown overboard. ''The Road to Oz: In Which Is Related How Dorothy Gale of Kansas, The Shaggy Man, Button Bright, and Polychrome the Rainbow's Daughter Met on an Enchanted Road and Followed it All the Way to the Marvelous Land of Oz.'' is the fifth of L.
