The Mars Volta
The Mars Volta is an American Rock music, rock band formed in 2001. The band's only constant members are Omar Rodríguez-López (guitar, producer, direction) and Cedric Bixler-Zavala (vocals, lyrics), whose partnership forms the core of the band. The band's current line-up also includes founding member Eva Gardner (bass), Omar's brother Marcel Rodríguez-López (keyboards, synths, percussion), Leo Genovese (piano, keyboard, saxophone) and Linda-Philomène Tsoungui (drums). Known for their energetic live shows and concept albums, The Mars Volta formed following the break-up of Rodríguez-López and Bixler-Zavala's previous band, At the Drive-In. De Facto (band)
De Facto (alternatively spelt as DeFacto) is an American dub music, dub reggae band which has included Cedric Bixler-Zavala, Omar Rodríguez-López, Isaiah "Ikey" Owens and Jeremy Ward (musician), Jeremy Ward. Biography The band began as small jam sessions after At the Drive-In shows. The original band consisted of Rodríguez-López, Bixler-Zavala, and Ward playing local shows around their hometown, El Paso, Texas. Bixler-Zavala said, "Yeah, actually, we used to be called the Sphinktators, that was early De Facto, just more rock." Rodríguez-López was the vocalist of the Sphinktators and remembers, "We used psychedelic sounds, Cedric played the bass, Jeremy played guitar, and Ralph Jasso played drums." For their first recording, they brainstormed the name De Facto Cadre Dub, which was later shortened to De Facto. Jason Lader is an American record producer, audio engineer, and mixer from New York. He is also known for playing bass guitar, keyboards, piano, guitar, and as a programmer. Michael Peter Balzary (born October 16, 1962), known professionally as Flea, is an Australian and American musician and actor. He is a founding member and bassist of the rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers. Flea and vocalist Anthony Kiedis are the only two continuous members of the band and he appears on all the band's albums. Linda Good
Linda Good is an American musician, composer, writer, songwriter and producer. She is the co-founder, with her twin sister Laura, of the alternative pop band The Twigs. Good has also toured as a keyboardist with Jane's Addiction (2001),The Mars Volta (2002), the Lisa Marie Presley Band (2002–2006) and Bitter:Sweet (2007–2008). She co-wrote the musical ''Ladyship,'' which was an Official Grand Jury Selection of the New York Musical Festival (NYMF) and debuted in New York City at the Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theater in July 2019. Jon Theodore
Jon Philip Theodore (born December 30, 1973) is an American drummer. He has been the current drummer for Queens of the Stone Age since 2013, and is also known for being the drummer for the Mars Volta from 2001 to 2006. Known for his explosive, multi-textural playing style, Theodore was a member of both Golden and Royal Trux before joining The Mars Volta in 2001. Theodore remained within the band for five years, recording the band's first three studio albums, '' De-Loused in the Comatorium'' (2003), '' Frances the Mute'' (2005) and '' Amputechture'' (2006), before departing at the request of guitarist and bandleader Omar Rodríguez-López. Blake Fleming
Blake Fleming is an American drummer known for his involvement with several influential experimental bands. Early life Born in Alton, Illinois, in 1972, Fleming started drumming at age 8, spending several years in fife and drumming corps, bagpipe bands, jazz bands, marching bands and orchestras. While in the Alton Colonial Fife and Drum Corps, Blake studied under Jerry Whitaker, the East Coast Rudimental Snare Drum Champion from West Point. Jeremy Ward (musician)
Jeremy Michael Ward (May 5, 1976 – May 25, 2003) was an American musician, best known as the sound technician and vocal operator for The Mars Volta and De Facto (band), De Facto. Biography Jeremy Ward was born in Fort Worth, Texas and later moved to El Paso, Texas, El Paso. He was a cousin of Jim Ward (musician), Jim Ward and was loosely associated with Jim's band At the Drive-In since its formation in 1994. After that band split for the first time in 2001, members Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodríguez-López invited Ward to contribute vocals and electronic effects to their interim project De Facto (band), De Facto, and then their more permanent band The Mars Volta. Isaiah "Ikey" Owens
Randolph Isaiah "Ikey" Owens (December 1, 1974 – October 14, 2014) was an American keyboardist known for his work with The Mars Volta, Jack White and an array of bands from the Long Beach music scene. Biography He notably performed as a member of Long Beach Dub Allstars, but in 1998 it was an encounter with Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodríguez-López of At the Drive-In at a concert in Irvine which proved fateful. In 1999 Owens lost his job at a financial management firm in Huntington Beach that "helped handle billion-dollar accounts for Disney and the Catholic Church", but he eventually received an invitation to join the dub reggae band De Facto and found himself touring Europe with Omar, Cedric, and Jeremy Ward. Linda-Philomène Tsoungui
Linda-Philomène (Philo) Tsoungui (born 1992 in Plauen) is a German drummer, percussionist, and music producer. She is known as the drummer for The Mars Volta, as well as several German acts, including singer Mine, rapper Fatoni, and rapper Chefket. Life and career Tsoungui was born in Plauen to a Cameroonian father and a German opera singer mother. At the age of six, she moved to Hof, where she later attended the musically oriented Jean-Paul-Gymnasium high school. She initially received piano lessons before switching to drums, studying under Claudio Estay and Johannes Potzel. From 2011 to 2015, she studied classical percussion at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München with Peter Sadlo and Bastian Jütte. Leo Genovese
Leonardo Genovese (born 1979) is an Argentine jazz pianist, keyboardist, and composer. He has played with The Mars Volta. Life and career Genovese was born in Venado Tuerto, Argentina, in 1979. He began playing the piano at the age of 5 or 6, but became more interested in playing around ten years later. Genovese began studying music and accounting at the University of Rosario, but soon abandoned accountancy, and in 2001 he began studying at the Berklee College of Music. He graduated in 2003. His first album, ''Haiku II'', was released the following year and was followed by ''Unlocked'' in 2008, but Genovese later talked them down, stating that they were "just a way to document where I was at the time". Marcel Rodríguez-López
Marcellus Rodríguez-López (born September 29, 1983) is an American multi-instrumentalist musician and younger brother of Omar Rodríguez-López. He is best known as the keyboardist and percussionist of the Mars Volta and the drummer for Zechs Marquise. He also produces electronic music under the moniker Eureka the Butcher and has performed with De Facto since 2024. Biography Marcel has been noted as to playing the bongos, congas, drums, cymbals, Maracas, keyboards and shekere. He formerly played in the band Thieves of Always, which was led by Ralph Jasso, who was a member of the Mars Volta (led by his elder brother Omar) on tour in 2002.
